    I don't want to jump in too late here but I think the truth is that Stephen Hillenberg did quit after the movie but they were hesitant to stop after the movie. So they replaced Hillenberg with one of the main directors of the show, Derek Drymon so they could continue.

    And yeah, I agree. From Season 4, it turned into crap.
