some people on facebook really should not be allowed to have devates with other people... I for one, enjoy debating, getting my point across, whatever. if i get in a debate with someone on here, on facebook, nohomersclub, whatever website, i always do my best to get my point across in a calm manner. But people on Facebook... there was a group earlier this year, and it resulted in a big fight between the school I go to and a different school not too far from where I go. The people from that school totally misunderstood the point of the group. It was called "Lacrosse Jerks" and it was about people who wave their lacrosse sticks around like they're so cool for playing it (it happens a lot at the school i go to). But the people from the other school misunderstood the entire point of the thread, and thought it was dissing every single player of lacrosse, as well as the game itself. And so they kept arguing with us over it. WE actually used wit, they used "you guys better shut up or we'll come and beat you" (this school is really violent from what I've heard). sure we did the occasional "Shut up we could beat you" comments (which weren't appropriate for the group but they used those comments WAY more), and it seems we got in trouble. The maker of the group, a guy who graduated from the school this year (june 2010) got in trouble I think, and someone actually threatened to SUE the school. WHAT? How is it the school's fault? Some of the comments were bad (the group was deleted so you can't read them) yes, but that's not the entire school's fault. I think I know why someone made that threat, and if so, it was mostly one students' fault. Therefore it isn't the school's fault, and I actually think that is a dumb and ludicrious(sp) thing to do. it's like if someone insults you and you feel violated or whatever, do something to the one person who threatened you, insulted you, but not the entire school. nothing did happen, as i said, the group was deleted, but still. It's not in anyway the school's fault, the school does not control what we do when we are not in it. But the main point is that the other schools' students comebacks were various threats. some of them even made comments about "Shadowing." some of the people that go to the school i go to go to this school, and if you "shadow" someone, you follow them around for the day to their classes, because you're interested in going to the school. i did this. but they made comments about wanting to "shadow" people at the school (meaning basically they'd want to try and beat some of us). I was on the group, yes, but I actually tried to act civilized. Having various comments being "shut up you dumb people we're gonna beat you" is stupid. Personally, I don't give a crap about strength; I'm relatively weak (getting stronger though), but I care about my intelligence. If people threaten to beat me, or if they DO beat me, I try to use my intelligence to get out of it; intelligent people are above fighting. This isn't the same as debating/arguing online of course. I'm talking about actually literally fighting people, punching, kicking, etc. I'm usually above that. I don't think I've ever been in an actual fight, but if I am, I will try to use my intelligence to get out of it. If that doesn't work, I MIGHT fight back, just because I'm not going to let someone attack me and me just stand there and take it. But it's not just this group, I see other groups (I'm not a part of but I look at), where people use these kinds of comments. Really, I'm all for people having Facebook, but dang... a lot of the people I see SUCK at debating. I had a debate about a year ago, it was me, my friend, and a few other people arguing over Family Guy/Simpsons (it had like 300 comments and it was a status of one of my friends, that's gotta be a record for a single person's status!) and almost every comment was stupid. Yes, stupid. I'm not just saying that to sound superior. "The Simpsons suck why are they yellow, they must have a disease." Yes, because the topic of them being YELLOW (No person on earth is yellow so why are they??) is such a good reason to dislike, or even hate, the show. That's such a lame thing. Um... Brian, the dog in family guy, talks. I don't know any talking dogs! Then they'd say something generic like "But he's funny." GOOD FOR HIM! HOW IS HE FUNNY! The funny thing is, I've actually seen a fair amount of Family Guy episodes, so I am used to their quality. My friends have probably seen like one or two Simpsons episodes from the entire series. Um... they have over 400! Ergo you can't really judge an entire show based on one or two episodes you may have liked. This debate we had actually made me mad because the reasons for them disliking Simpsons (one of my friends said "Only old people watch Simpsons"...) were stupid. I actually gave reasons for why i dislike family guy (random humor, plots, etc), but did I get anything half-way smart as a response? No, just more generic reasons. The Simpsons being YELLOW is the stupidest reason I have ever heard for disliking the show. It's not like that itself affects the quality of the show. The following week, me and a couple friends (same friends in this debate, only it was just 2-3 of us instead of like 5-6) debated if we still liked Spongebob. Again, I tried giving reasons for why I disliked the later episdoes of Spongebob, and they did nothing but tell me "Dude it's still awesome". One of the comments was he's yellow, and "yellow is awesome". Do I even need to tell you how stupid/hypocritical/etc that is? Yea, sponges ARE yellow, but you can't hate a show for having characters yellow (in the simpsons yellow is white), when you like/love a different show when the main character is the same color. It doesn't matter. yes, sponges are yellow so it makes sense spongebob is, but again, the simpsons being yellow doesn't affect quality one bit. That's the final time I ever debate/argue with my friends on facebook. And sometimes when I see people in groups debating I just wanna pop in and say "You're proving (so and so's) point, you're being dumb", only I know I won't get an actually intelligent response. I like how I get all mad/defensive in debates, but that just shows I'm trying to debate something with people who can't debate properly. as some of you know i took a debate class for "project term" at my school. that didn't really have any information on it that i didn't already know. I know how to debate. It's not hard. I know how to have a GOOD debate, but it has to be with someone who can give good reasons for why they feel the way they do. If they don't, it is just a waste of my time.
