did anyone ever realize that this is a CARTOON? Of course things wont be biologically right. spongebob is a sponge, and you dont see anyone saying anything about that!

First of all it's BARNACLE BOY, not barnical :p
They do look like humans, but I don't think they are 100% humans, because they are super heroes, therefore they have super powers and one them it's definitely being able to breath underwater, and apparently have the same size as these sea creatures do, otherwise they would be too huge to live in Bikini Bottom and save the citizens. Makes sense, huh?

yeah. barnacle boy is probably 50% human, and 50% squid (because the nose is similar to squidward's). mermaid man is...50% mermaid and 50% human. so he has gills but looks human.
