Welcome to another edition of Clappy's Debate of the Week!

Alright lets pretend that Seasons 1-3 and the movie never existed.

The pilot for the series would be Fear of a Krabby Patty/Shell of a Man.

The question is simple. Would you still be a SpongeBob fan?

I would still be, but not as big as a fan as I am now (mainly because I love Seasons 1-3). I found Season 4 to be good and Season 5 to be slightly below average in my books, however Season 6 is good enough to counter Season 5 and Season 7 so far has been good. But like I said I would still be a fan and still come over to these boards and chat SpongeBob.

If it started with Fear of a Krabby Patty, then that means the series would have began in 2005. By that point I had already checked out of Nickelodeon mostly, and probably wouldn't even give the show a chance.

First of all, I would LOVE the pilot, since Fear of a Krabby Patty is one of my all-time favorite episodes. But I wouldn't become a fan, simply because if it premiered in 2005 I probably never would of heard of it let alone watch it since at that period of time I was growing out of cartoons.

I think I'd still be a fan, I find a lot of the newer episodes enjoyable still despite all the hate towards them.

The whole idea of a sponge under the sea wouldn't have worked in 2005. In 1999, it would have worked so much better, because the 90s were a time of animation that was mostly for adults (South Park, Family Guy, King Of The Hill, etc) and SpongeBob proved that animation could be for kids again. I'm not sure if it would achieve as much popularity- but remember- no one would even compare it to Seasons 1-3. So while everyone says, "It's good, but not as good as Seasons 1-3," if Seasons 1-3 and the movie never existed, people would just say, "It's good!"

I think I would still love the show, but not as much, of course. The thing is that I don't like or know most of the cartoon shows that came out around that period since I really wasn't into cartoons by then, it was SpongeBob, in fact, that got me into loving cartoons more when I started watching it again in 2006 (after I started watching it in 2000 but stopped watching cartoons in 2004). Even if the show wouldn't be near as popular or great, like DC-Dude said, we wouldn't have anything better to compare seasons 4-7 to.

I'm actually not sure about that. SpongeBob is the my all-time favorite cartoon and the best we've ever had in a long time, so to me it's kinda hard to imagine life without SpongeBob.

Maybe if we weren't always comparing it to Season 1-3 we'd like the new episodes better.

I wouldn't be surprised if when the show started with Season 4, people would begin going down a whole "The show went downhill after Season 1 (4)" road.

Even if I decided to give it a chance (which I doubt), then without seasons 1-3 to get me into it, I'm not sure I'd like it that much.

I agree; the time to introduce this show would have been a whole lot different. Plus, since FoaKP/SoaM aren't good introductory episodes, the viewers would be very confused about the premise of the show and would have no idea what it is they're watching. Plus, the first few episodes of season 4 tend to be a bit fast-paced and don't have the greatest of all storylines. There would be a good chance that most viewers would decide to tune out of show completely, not give the rest of the episodes a chance, and would ultimately lead to the show's cancellation.

"SpongeBob" is one of the shows that got me very interested in Nickelodeon, and I don't think I would have kept watching the channel up to 2005 if the show never existed. The show's popularity peak came during its first three seasons, when great dedication was put into episodes and the movie. Plus, the show had Stephen Hillenburg back then, so if season 4 was the first season, then the show would have been created by someone else. So, in other words, I would have never became a fan of the show if the earlier seasons never existed.
