Okay, I think we all know how this episode goes. SpongeBob tries to give everyone Christmas, Squidward doubts him, then when Santa doesn't come, Squidward picks on him, and SpongeBob still gives him a present, therefore leading Squidward to dress like Santa and make everyone happy. Now let's rewind to where Squidward gets the present. As we know, he gets a hand carved claranet. When Squidward pushes a button, it plays the nut cracker song. However it wasn't always like this.

If you have the season two dvd set, go to the original story boards of this episode, and get to the point where Squidward pushes the button on the claranet. It plays a completely different song: Silent Night, rather than the nut cracker song. Strangely, this was change, and it is a shame, considering that it is a much better song. Well, my guess is that they changed this to avoid controversy, not wanting to use a Christmas song that mentions Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, along with other things involving Religion. Give you're thoughts on this.

Well the fact that they used Christmas and never Hannukah, Kwanza, Ramadon or other winter holidays is biased. I mean at least Rugrats did Hannukah (yes I'm Christian).

Since Rugrats is an older show, it was different. That is because, over the years, television has gotten far more strict. I mean look at Mickey Mouse. Characters would carry around stuff like weapons and cigar, but they would be sued these days. It is the same with Religion. I think is it dumb.

Extemley. Parents and neighbors do that kind of stuff all the time.

I don't know why they feel such a need to remove cigarets. Honestly, kids probably see that stuff everyday.

For the original question, it probably was removed to prevent controversy like you said.

The cigarettes question is despite the fact that adults do it all the time, TV is supposed to be a place where you can be away from all of the troubles or problems that are in the real world sometimes. And having the show feature that kind of stuff might just lead to more complaints by adults who think that the show that the viewer is watching shouldn't have that kind of content. It may hold true that anyone of any age can watch SpongeBob, but do people want to start having memories about a bad incident that happened with a cigarette (like a fire) when they're watching TV?

Personally, the reason why would be, the fact how there are "Religious Groups" Take, the group that started the argument about The Golden Compass's author being a Athiest just because hes not sure if there is a God. Well lets say this Group, finds that this is a Mockery of God, and starts a converies which leads to the show being cancel'd or something big happening. Changing the song, would be a away to avoid something like that happening to Spongebob.

that song is a good song but for some reason i dont thing that the spongebob creators will allow that for some reason maby cause they dident like the song and liked the "nutcracker" song better

They sang the full "Silent Night" song in an episode of Drake and Josh. Of course that is generally aimed at older viewers.

Anyway, it said, "Happy Holidays" at the end of that episode, so nobody should be complaining.

    actually

there's been argument where i live about saying "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas" i don't think that it is a major argument look. Silent Night is a song about a Blissful thing happening to our world and i don't think anythings wrong with that
    and for the record
i just think they played the nutcracker because they wanted a fast moving song

If we put the Religion reference aside, there isn't much doubt that they would have used Silent Night. It is a much nicer song, especially for that use. They took it out probably due to it's mentions about the Virgin and Mother and Child and Holy Infant.
