    That's because he wanted to train himself to be ready for any dangerous situation. Remember in The Bully, Flats couldn't hurt him? When SpongeBob was a child, he tortured himself by putting himself through the most painful situations, so in time he was tough enough to take anything. He put the holes in himself .

    How can Patrick talk? The last time I checked, sea stars can't say anything .

    Check77(me) said as a reply:

    Spongebob needs to have a bling sheild or something to pass, remember in the mini-episode: "Mrs. Puff, You're fired" when that new teacher, and then sponegbob couldn't see so he would of passed if he was blind folded in the first place.
