Katara has been working on waterbending for much of her life and managed to find her own way of doing things. Many of the moves Katara used in her fight with Pakku ("The Waterbending Master" chapter) were not things she could have picked up from that waterbending scroll she stole ("The Waterbending Scroll" chapter).

Toph had to find her own way of doing things, too, since her dad didn't want her to do anything he thought might be too difficult for her. Katara has more in common with Toph than with Pakku's "regular" students.

I remember in the commentary during "The Waterbending Master" that Katara's style was like that of a street fighter - passionate but unrefined. I don't see why so many people are disbelieving of her skill. Ever heard of the term prodigy? Like Azula with firebending.

if she did "know" those moves, why didn't she teach them to Aang? Is he just selfish or what?
Growing up, I had teachers who did things that were not commonly practiced. When I asked if they could show me what they did, they usually told me something to the effect of, "I made it up, and I don't really want you to pick up my bad habits."

what I don't get is why some people think that Zuko will be Aang's Firebending teacher. Sure its someones opinion, but its not practicall.

    1. Hes not a Master
    2. He doesn't have a full undersatanding of the element
    3. Not so much of the teaching type

idk who Aang's teacher will be but at least saying that it could be Jeong Jeong or Iroh is at least practical

    1. neither is toph officialy
    2. yet. don't forget his spiritual crisis next friday. who knows what he could relize. + Iroh is always with him. his understanding could rub off on Zuko
    3. somebody needs to watch Zuko Alone again. remeber how he taught the little kid how to use broad swords? Did he not do a good job w/ that? I think he did.

I wouldn't worry...Mike and Bryan have said that Iroh's been recast after Mako's passing...they wouldn't have gotten a new voice actor if they were going to write him out of the series...of course that doesn't mean he'll make it to the end of season three...maybe he'll start teaching Aang, something will happen and Zuko will be forced to complete his training...sort of a Qui Gon Jinn/Obi Wan Kinobi thing...without the shared student turning to the dark side bit...

If she was a prodigy, wouldn't she have been better than Aang? She made those moves up herself and had much more time to practice them and still Aang was better. I'm just saying, I??don't like how she sucked in the beginning and then all of a sudden she had this skill out of no where. But I agree with the street fighter thing, that makes sense, but the rest of it, not really. And as for that whole??"you've advanced more quickly then??any student I've ever taught. You've proved with *whatever* you can accomplish anything." if that's suppose to fill in the plot whole, not buying it. That's way too fast to master an element for anyone. Azula is??a prodigy, and she didn't even master firebending that fast. But hey, like I've said before, TV show, anything can happen.

And for the love of God people, Toph is as much a master as Katara, maybe more. Just because master Pakku said "Then he'd better start calling you master Katara" doesn't mean she has the skill or experience of a master waterbender all it means is Aang needs a teacher and the creators figured, what the hell, he needs a master anyway, let's make it Katara. But that's what bugs me though, Katara sucked in the beginning, but then all of a sudden she's a master waterbender, it's unrealistic. I'm sorry for basically repeating myself for the upteenth time, it's just, Katara's character in general can be a little annoying. Whatever, I'm done rambling now.

This thread got really off topic, I thought this was about Zuko becoming Aang's firebending master.

Even if she is a prodigy, there is no way that she can be better than Aang, the Avatar who has learned waterbending like THOUSANDS times in his other lives...

That's not true, she could be better than Aang just not the avatar spirit. The avatar spirit has mastered in a thousands times, not Aang.??Aang is the avatar, but all that really means is that he posses the avatar spirit and can learn all four elements. I mean, Aang wasn't better than Toph and he was probably naturally gifted at waterbending because he's already mastered airbending, the??two are both??defensive arts??(he was probably an airbending prodigy).
