It had nothing to do with Mako's death. Bryke have said in an interview that Iroh was always going to have a small role in Season 3, Mako or no. It's a simple fact that there comes a time in the story when the "wise mentor" character has to depart - this was not Iroh's story - he has to leave so that the heroes can learn to grow up and start acting by themselves without having him around to save the day when everything goes wrong. Iroh was not present much in B3 for the same reason that Yoda and Obi-wan were dead in the last Star Wars movie, why Dumbledore was killed in the 6th Harry Potter book, why Gandalf was dragged down into a pit by the balrog just when his friends really needed him, why Merlin was killed some time before King Arthur's greatest battle, why Enkidu dies just when Gilgamesh needs him most, etc. It's part of the "Hero's Journey" storyline that Avatar has adhered to. |

True. Toph doesn't really have any emotional turmoil. Except, of course, when she goes on a field trip with Zuko |
I used to think Toph was a really one dimensional character, but I realized her growth was very subtle. She learned to accept people into life and to trust. It wasn't blatant, but people with eye for writing and character development could pick up on that.

which stayed true to her character, because she wasn't one to let emotions effect her or show through.

I really do not know why Iroh had a small role. He is the best character on the show. I wanted to see him completely destroy Ozai. I mean this guy got the role of firelord stolen away from him and Ozai sent his crazy daughter to kill him. Iroh had to put up with too much crap. Although i do admire the fact he has self control and did not go psyco. |

Iroh needed to have a small role because it wasn't his story - this is the Story of Aang and Zuko, and as such those two are the ones who need to get everything done (recieving occaisonal help from their friends). As awsome as he is, Iroh could no more have a big role in the Story than Avatar Roku could. |
