He never had a chance to practice. All mastery needs practice.

I'm starting to think all airbenders know how to do is dodge and run. No offense. But come on Aang, kick Azula's ass already!

The boy is too soft. Flat out...he doesn't have killer instinct...and that isn't just about trying to kill your opponent, it's just being able to think aggressively and strategically...who ever teaches Aang Firebending better drill this into his head...

Aang was about to steamroll over A&Z when the Dai Li soldiers dislodged him, and you say he can't take the offensive?

That...and he's too careless. Why would he fly 50 ft in the air just to be vulnerable? He could have just buried himself under the ground and lift the upper layer of the dirt and trap everyone in it.

Oh wait, then Katara would be in that mess. ...

He didn't have any strategy when he went into the Avatar state, he just was gonna start laying waste to everyone, until Azula cut him off with an full body electrical massage...

Like I mentioned, he never had the chance to practice. If he had stayed with Guru Patik??instead of charging to the defense of Katara and her unclear level of danger, he could have practiced a little.

As a person who has studied a fair amount on Ba Gua so far, the form of Kung Fu Aang has mastered to airbend, I've found it to be very much a defensive art.?? One of the major premises of Ba Gua is to "round off" your opponant's attacks and/or turn it back against them. I notice now that whenever Aang was attacking someone, he was using Tai-Chi (Waterbending) or Southern style Praying Mantis (Toph and Aang's style of Earthbending).?? Tai-Chi is not a very aggressive style of Kung Fu either, however most forms of praying mantis is or has much more potential to be.?? Aang has not been an earthbender all that long, even though he is learning from easily the most powerful earthbender there is.?? I would not be surprised if Aang could bend metal like Toph.?? I just think that if Aang had some more time to become confident with his skills and not have to worry about Katara's safety and mastering the Avatar state, he'd be alot more formidable.?? If you remember in "The Desert" Aang had no problem dropping people and things, without any regard to anyone or anything, when he was looking for Appa. All he had to go on was a little bit of waterbending, too.

I imagine I'd be very scared in a situation like Aang's.?? SO scared of losing Katara to SO many different things.?? Probably so scared of activating the Avatar state again and hurting SO many people.

In case you haven't picked up on it (I'm not trying to be insulting, I'm just bringing it up so you DO notice it. no offense). Every bending discipline has different styles of fighting. Airbenders blow back, dodge, and run away. They're fast, and have no real offense. Waterbenders flow, deflect, and have a precise attack. Good balance, not superb in any one thing, but they can do everything, AND healing. Earthbending has power. Strong offense, strong defense. Firebending is the strongest attack, they go for burning, go for the kill. Not much defense, but there's a very good saying that a strong offense is the best defense.

I think we can all agree on this: Aang will not become complete until he learns Firebending. And not those Jeong Jeong basics. I think that's all Jeong Jeong wanted to teach him since hadn't learned Water and Earthbending yet...

Even the Guru told Aang that he was a firebender, and at some point in the Avatar journey he would have to master firebending.

Nuh uhhh, if he could consciously go into the Avatar state, then he can control his actions in that state.

Hah. Electrical stimulation is a great way for massaging...

I can say that he does need to learn firebending to complete his journey.?? As for his defensiveness can win battles easily too.?? Look at the Deserter episode.??
Aang said to Zhao, "You have lost this battle."??
Zhao then said, "How do you see that I lost the battle when you did not even throw a single punch."
Pointing to the boats on fire Aang then says, "But you have.?? Have a nice walk home."

Now Zhao lost his life to the spirit of the ocean.?? So in this instance I can agree that Aang does not want to kill anyone.?? That's why he saved Zuko from the blizzard.?? However he doe sunderstand that he needs to defeat Ozai.?? I think Pooldude said it one time that if you cut the head off the snake the body falls too.?? I think that is going to be when Aang will kill.?? He can kill Azula but she is really not his true target.?? He might think that she is a victim of her father's madness and that she might be saveable.?? Do we the viewers believe that??? No I do not think we do.

So in conclusion, I think Aang will kill only at the right time.?? To do so too early might create inner turmoil that might keep him from doing it at the critical moment that he needs to.

As air has been portrayed as peaceful, it will take Aang a great deal of effort to actually take someone out directly. It is worse than the block he had when trying to learn earthbending since both are against his nature. He and Zuko have some of the same problems. Neither of them seem to prepare beyond the current moment or plan ahead for what to do next. In Aangs case, it seemed he figured the AS would be enough to walk over everyone without knowing or planning what to do. This caused him to defenseless when he got blasted in the back (should have seen that coming Aang). As a strategist of any kind you must learn there are always weaknesses to exploit but you also make those weaknesses the hardest to get to. Whoever mentioned it earlier, good catch on the fighting styles and relations to the benders. I have thought the same as well as I have studied a great deal in a few different styles. Fire is by far the most aggressive and Aang hasn't learned it yet so maybe he will be a little more aggressive then. I am waiting to see Appa's reaction when Aang starts firebending since we know he is afraid of fire (but does Aang know).
