Techanically, their kids might bend any of the four elements.
They could inherit water bending from Katara.
Since Aang is the avatar, their kids might inherit water bending, or air bending, or fire bending, or earth bending.

Well, really, just because they'd be the Avatar's kids doesn't mean that they could inherit all four types of bending. Yes, it'd be possible for them to either waterbend or airbend, but that would only be because of their genetics. Firebending and earthbending were things that Aang learned, but that he wasn't born with.
Aang has the genes of all the four bending types.
The Avatar is born a bender of all bending arts. The avatar just learns their native element first.
That doesn't mean he only has the genes of his native element.

Actually no. If we are talking about genetics, Aang is a through and through Airbender - he is an Air Nomad, after all. He is spiritually connected to the other elements through his past lives.
If we argue the matter spiritually, Air probably still comes out on top. Air is Aang's natural element - the one he learned first, etc, etc. And once spitiual matters get involved, then destiny matters are soon to follow, seizing on the fact that it would be most convenient if Aang and Katara had an Airbending child.
An avatar is born with the genes and abilities to bend all 4 elements.
Their children will get one of their bending art from the Avatar/Katara.
Their children has a chance of being an:
Airbender: 1/5 or 20% chance of being an airbender
Waterbender: 2/5 or 40% chance of being a waterbender
Earthbender: 1/5 or 20% chance of being an earthbender
Firebender: 1/5 or 20% chance of being a firebender
Note: Between Aang and Katara, there is Katara(water) and Aang (water, air, earth, fire). That is why it is 2/5 or or 40% chance to be a waterbender.

Not quite correct. Aang has the abilities to bend Water, Earth, and Fire, but not the genetics. Spirituality and reincarnation have a lot to do with it. His genes are 100% Airbender (presumably).
The avatar is born with the spirituallity AND the genes to bend all 4.
Everyone in the avatar world is born with the genes to bend. Their spirituallity is what determines if they can unlock and use that gene to bend.
The avatar is the embodiment of all 4 bending arts and has the genes of all 4 as well.
Thus, what I said about their kids is correct.

people are just shooting back at each other...i believe its spiritual...aang had the genes to airbend...but then because the avatar spirit is with him, he has the ability to bend the other elements!!!

Actually, Mike and Bryan mentioned that Aang and Katara's kids would be either airbenders, waterbenders, or non-benders. They wouldn't be able to bend four elements at once like an avatar or be firebenders or earthbenders

Aang was born an Airbender, which means he carried the genes of an Airbender (So if he has a child, there's a pretty good chance that they'd be Airbenders). But they cannot bend all four elements, because being avatar is not a gene. It's something spiritual, and can only happpen exactly when the previous Avatar dies (Unless I am mistaken). Since Aang learned Earth, Water, and Firebending later in life, it was not in his genes. I'm only guessing, but I think being the avatar is in your soul, therefore making it imposible to pass down.
