All of the episodes mentioned does further the plot, wether in a big or small way. The Avatar State explained about the avatar state of course. Roku explains how it is a defense mechanism. In The Drill, you witness the plot of the Fire Nation to invade Ba Sing Se. The Drill is later then proof to the Earth King that there is a war. And on Avatar Day, there is an explanation of Kyoshi and her war, which later reconnects to the episode 'The Old Masters', and she gives Aang her advice on how to defeat the Fire Lord. And on The Chase, you see Toph and Iroh talking with each other, and that later reconnects to Ember Island Players. It is the small stuff that makes the show big.

not really. i guess it's just stuff the writers add in to give the episode more of a twist.

Definitely my favorite season. Doesn't seem forced like Book 3, and not too introductory like Book 1 (except for the last few episodes)

Random Question. In the crossroads of destiny when Aang rescues Katara and Zuko. Both Aang and Zuko look at each other angrily. I understand why Anag does, but not Zuko. Zuko sees Aang as prize and way to get his honor back, but not as an enemy. Why was he (Zuko) also angry at Uncle Iroh for aiding the Avatar. And since he was going to live in Ba Sing Se, didn't he lose his ambition to capture the avatar?
