I was just watching the episode and noticed something that brought a good question to mind.?? While Aang is in the spirit world riding the dragon, Iroh notices him as he flies overhead.?? I wonder how he could do that when no one else could see him.?? Any thoughts or was there some other explanation explored in another episode?

The only people who can see spirits are those who have been to the Spirit World. Iroh has. That was mentioned in the Seige of the North.

Iroh was once on the spirit world, he has great respect for the spirits, he has seen them, and has a lot of knowledge about them, also he is very wise and has a perfect balance on his spirit, therefore he can feel spiritual force when no one can, That's how he was able to "see" the Avatar's spirit.

But Katara saw Aang's spirit in SoTN Pt 2, and she, as far as we know, has never been to the spirit world.

Yeah, that's right i always wondered how she saw him.
Perhaps, it's because of the strong bond they have with each other.

That situation was different. Aang was done with the spirit world and was going back to his body. Katara DID NOT see Aang, however, in The Spirit World (the episode at discussion) but Iroh did. I just think the situation is different somehow. I think Yue and Sokka saw Aang's spirit going back to his body too. Katara just said something. If Katara could see into the spirit world too, she would have seen Aang while he was actually in the spirit world in episode 7.

Katara saw a light and said "That's gotta be Aang!" To me, that means she saw something. To me, there are is one spirit world, but the Avatar can be in spirit form in the physical world, and in the spirit form in the spirit world, which appears to be physical form. My theory is that Iroh managed to get into the spirit world in physical form, and that rearrange his spirit somehow so that he can see spirits in spirit form in the physical world. Nonetheless, that still doesn't explain how Katara managed to see Aang in spirit form in the physical world.

    ... I hope that wasn't confusing.

When Iroh saw ang they were on the physical world, but Aang was a spirit, it's the same case when Katara saw him, they were on the physical world but Aang was a spirit.

Do you not recall earlier in ep. 7 when Aang was trying to talk to Katara and tell him he lost Sokka but he couldn't because he was in the Spirit World. He was in the same form when Iroh saw him. I'm guessing it was just a star or something that everyone could see when Aang was going back to his physical world body in ep. 20. That makes no sense that one episode Katara can't see Aang in the spirit world and later she all of a sudden can.

I agree in that it makes no sense, unless the creators decide to explain it at some point.
