The other South Pole waterbenders aren't dead or anything, they just left to fight in the war. Why would that make the south style of bending extinct?

How can sand benders be earth benders? Toph spent the whole episode complaining about not being on solid land, just loose sand.
Sandbending is a specific form of earthbending, just like the swamp people were a different/specific form of waterbending. Toph was just mad because sand is loose and vibrations don't go through as well like it would if it was totally solid.

Well if this is true (about toph complaning about the vibrations and the sand).?? Why didn't she complain in the episode (I believe it was called the chase)?? when appa sheds and they run...remember??? Anway in the end Aang was in the middle of the dessert in a deserted town.?? Why didn't she complain then??? Or am I just making noise??? input please...

In The Chase, she wasn't complaining because she was still able to go on solid ground every once in a while! And in the desert town, it looked like the sand was more hard packed together making it more solid. So as long as Toph can at least be on solid enough ground, she's fine, but she can't be on loose ground like sand! Comprende?

Ya, the dirt in the town didn't really look like sand, more like hard packed dirt. In "The Desert" she was not complaining because she could not bend, she was complaining that she could not "see". And we saw her bend sand, when she was trying to keep the library up, she bent the sand under her to solid rock so she could stand on it.

Wait a minuto!?? I thought that katara was the only south pole waterbender left in her tribe.?? If that's true then shouldn't the south??style of waterbending be extinct. Katara did learn the northern water style did she not?!

Mostly Northern. She just barely knows just a little bit of Southern, because she did know a limited amount of moves before finding/stealing a waterbending scroll. She couldn't have been the only waterbender left in the South Pole for??all of her life (assuming they're all dead), could she? How else would she have known those moves unless there was at least one other waterbender in the Southern Tribe while she was growing up (unless she somehow figured it out through trial and error)?

I always guessed she just figured them out from goofing around with her bending utill she got it right. Although one of the men might have been a bender.
