You're all so concerned that Aang should have kids so there can be airbenders again. Why can't someone just learn airbending from Appa or just in the same way airbending first started (Make sure Appa doesn't die). I mean, you have, like 400 years before you have to worry about it, that's enough time right ? (Be kind)

Anyway, no one would be able to learn Airbending from Appa, here's why. Back in times before anyone bent the 4 elements, people were not born into nations, because there were no nations. The nations were named after the 4 bendable elements, which had not been bendable at this point. A group of nomads began learning Airbending from the Bison, as other nations began learning their bending from the Moon, Badgermoles, and Dragons. After "bending" came into play, the four nations were created, each named after the element that the people there bended.
Since bending was a major factor now, a new "law" of nature eventually came up: You can only bend the element of the nation you are born into. The reason being so that no one would be more powerful than the Avatar: the only person who can bend 4 elements.
Now onto Appa. The basic reason someone couldn't learn Airbending from Appa, is because they would have to be born into the Air Nomads to do so. Since Aang is the last Airbender, the only way to birth a child into the Air Nomads, is for Aang to have children with someone, like Katara. However, we do not know if these children would be considered Air Nomad or Water Tribe. (They couldn't be both as it has been stated that each person can only bend 1 element except for the Avatar)
By some off chance this child is born into Air Nomads, he would not need to learn from Appa, as his father, Aang would teach him.
In conclusion, the only way to bring Airbending back is for Aang to have children, as no one would be able to learn from Appa due to the fact that no one besides Aang is born into the Air Nomads.

Wait, you just said that there were no nations when people learned airbending, so someone doesn't have to be a Air Nomad in order to learn it (or at least study it.) Plus, if a possible bender was born in the Earth Kingdom, they don't have to earthbend just like how firebenders can be born in fire nation colonies in the Earth kingdom (I think everybody agreed on that last part a while ago [Lurking]).
However, if that is wrong, then what if people were born in the Air Temples (I'm pretty sure some one was born in the Northern Air Temple.[Forced explanation in spoiler tag if it works.])

When I said "born into nations" I didn't mean "where" they were born, I meant spiritually which nation they are born into.
For instace, if an Earth Kingdom man and an Earth Kingdom woman give Birth to a baby in the Fire Nation, that doesn't mean the baby is Fire Nation, it is Earth Kingdom, which means it can only Earthbend.
The reason why no one can learn from Appa is because there are no Air Nomad parents to birth the baby. If you want to Air Bend, you have to be birthed by Air Nomad parents (or at least one of them)
Aang is the LAST AIRBENDER, as stated by the creators, so he is the only one that can birth a child which has the ability to Airbend.
The people who learnt Airbending became the Air Nomads, and by spiritual law if you were birthed by Air Nomad parents, you could ONLY Airbend.

Excellent answer. Although I think there is room for more people to learn airbending. Outside of the traditional four nations we have seen that there are a lot of benders who do not associate themselves with anyone nation. For example you have the swamp benders, sand benders and even the sun worshippers of the fire nation. I think it would be very hard to get over the fact that Aang is the last airbender, but this may not be totally impossible. Although the air nomad culture is set to die with Aang, just as southern waterbending may actually end with Katara.
If there was an Air book to the sotry it would have to explain how to restart an entire culture, and that maybe too much work for a cartoon, no offense to the great writing/writers.
