Toph has a much closer connection to the earth than others, using it as her version of sight. You don't see many others with that kind of affinity. Other benders, if they can do it (which I doubt), would have a FAR more difficult time doing it. Besides, the great benders surely would've tried to overcome this major weakness that the Fire Nation doesn't fail to exploit.

And Toph's claim of being the best bender? No need to be taken literally and seriously. Besides, her technique comes from her special relationship, with a little superior skill thrown in.

Also, it has never been implied that King Bumi can bend metal.
well it seems obvious to me that there are other metalbenders otherwise how would the FN know to find a way to combat this.

That made no sense. The Fire Nation uses metal excessively so that they negate the Earthbender's power.

And about Bumi, I don't believe I was responding to you about that.
mate i think you just proved my point.Who told the FN that earthbenders could bend metal in the first place?Perhaps that was learnt from experience during the war?

i dont think toph is the only metalbender, because of several reasons.

1.?? there are other types of bending, sandbending for instance

2.?? aang does mention wishing he could be a metalbender during his attack on the drill

3.?? guru patik reiterates the theme of connection, emphasizing the notion of metal and earth

it makes little sense that all these things happened just to have toph to be the only earthbender who could bend metal.?? there definetely had to have been benders who've done it in the past, as per aang's remark.

1.??How precisely does??mentioning another application for an already established bending art prove that she??isn't the only??person able to bend metal?

    2. Intially, that was for??comedic??effect??but is now can be considered as??forshadowing. Wouldn't be the first time he did??that??either.

    3. Kinda like #1. Yeah that's what he said in the show but then what? They're connected but certain requirements have to be met, which Toph does with her blindness.

I would not say Toph is the only metal bender. I'm sure there are other earth benders that have learned to bend metal.

If so, two good earthbenders didn't even know that. Don't think so.

They may be two GOOD earthbenders, but STUPID earthbenders as well.

the reason Toph was able to bend the metel is because she could physically see the impurities in the metel and was able to focus on them. The only reason she was able to see those impurities was because of her earth/vibration vision...which other earthbenders don't have and as far as we know is exclusive to Toph.

even master earthbenders would likely not be able to do it because they would not be able to see the impurities and could not focus their power on them. Also, those cages Toph broke were made of earth kingdom metel, fire nation metel is far more pure, perhapse pure enought to prevent her from bending it

I will only believe that if it comes up in the episodes/chapters, not from a website-- not even from nick.com .
Toph can teach Aang, or Aang can realize the likelihood of metal-bending based on Guru Patik's counsel.

I'll will admit that was not stupid, that was cool as LOX! If Toph can bend metal what do you think is next? Katara bending people? And I can see Bummi bending metal as well:
Aang: we came back to rescue you again... WHAT ARE YOU DOING OUT SIDE OF YOUR METAL BOX!?
Bummi: Well I sneak out on occasions to take dump *Bends metal box open and cawls back in, bends it close* See no problem.
Aang: *slaps self on forehead* That it your completely insane, either that or your senile! Bummi: Aaah, more like both.

The way i see it, metal bending was just an idea.?? Remember Aang is the AVATAR!?? He's supposed to be able to master ALL bending.?? IF there really were metal benders, then Aang should have said "i wish i studdied metal bending", instead of wishing he was a metal bender.

In my opinion, metal bending is just one of those human ideas that someone eventually found a way to make reality such as flight, electricity etc.., and that Toph could (and i emphasize "could") have been the first to discover.

So, in my book, pending further confirmation from the 3rd season, Toph is officially the first and only metal bender.

I agree... the one thing that distinguishes Toph from Bumi is that, by Bumi's own admission, he could not be Aang's teacher because he had yet to master Neutral Jin.?? He said in "Return to Omashu" that Aang would be taught by a master that had already accomplished this... and that was Toph.

He never said that he hadn't mastered it. He couldn't teach Aang because he was waiting to see what happened next, so he gave him advice on who his teacher should be. He said your teacher needs to be someone who has mastered neutral Jin. That doesn't mean he himself hadn't mastered it, he just couldn't teach Aang at the time.

(For the record, I do think Toph is a better earthbender than him, as much as I wish she weren't)
