In case you've been under a rock these past years, the Swamp Tribe is a group of waterbenders in a large swamp in the Earth Kingdom. If you have been under a rock, you'll be saying "Wait, what? Waterbenders in the Earth Kingdom? Let's burn 'em with fire on sticks!" But hear me out. Since they are a tribe and independent from the Earth Kingdom in a sense, they can be counted as a Water Tribe with a status higher than the South Pole but lower than the North Pole given by the fact that they're a seperate colony that defunct from the two major tribes and has possibly the most Waterbenders of the two tribes. But suppose that the swamp is, in some form or other, controlled and considered under the jurisdiction of Earth Kingdom laws. Given that to be the case, then the Swamp Tribe is nothing more than a group of Waterbenders under the rule of the Earth Kingdom. What do you think?

i think i would define the swamp tribe as a group of Waterbenders living in the Earth Kingdom separate. then the question is, what does that make them? refugees? or, Earth Kingdom citizens?

We can rule out refugees. They didn't leave during some major conflict but for some other reason. The Earth Kingdom didn't take them in per se to protect them.

It should be remembered that the Earth Kingdom itself does not appear to be politically unified. Although most of it seems to be under the rule of the Earth King in Ba Sing Se, Omashu appears to be a smaller independant Kingdom. Much like the Southern and Northern Water tribes are two seperate entities that are simply very similar. So my guess is that the Swamp tribe is its own territory.

Honestly, I think the Swamp Tribe were Southern Water Tribe and Northern Water Tribe members that didn't like the cold and ice of the tribes, so they ventured into the Earth Kingdom. Upon stumbling into each other, they looked together for a nice place to reside. They felt a spiritual connection to the Swamp and now, the descendants have gotten so used to Swampbending, they are not the slightest bit in touch with the north or south. but they are the bridge of Waterbenders between the two.

is it stupid? or is it kind of reasonable?

That explains the origins of the Swamp Tribe well enough, but not whether it's independent of the Earth Kingdom, part of it, or controlled by it.

The thing is, the Earth Kingdom was never fully governed. It existed in basically states. Ba Sing Se was the capital, and all of the villages to the west were all pretty much loyal to the Earth King. But to the east, the villages and small towns had elders to govern them, and the elders were pretty much resistant to the Earth King. Some went as far as to have a king of their own, like Bumi. So while the Earth King is the soverign of the kingdom, there are smaller patches of leaders.

If I'm correct, then in the Swamp, didn't the tribe have like a spiritual advisor, or something?

Which is most likely why it was so vulnerable to the Fire Nation.

Anyway, back on topic, the Swamp Tribe is no more part of the Earth Kingdom than the Western Air Temple was part of the Fire Nation.

I perceive the swamp tribe as a completely separate tribe from the Water Tribe AND the Earth Kingdom. That huge forest they live in is basically deserted. I don't consider that Earth Kingdom territory. It's sort of a no-mans land, in my opinion. I guess the swamp tribe is similar to the sand benders in my own little world.

If you're using that logic, then the Si Wong Desert would be the same way yet is still Earth Kingdom territory.
