It depends, as we know that the moon was the first water bender it would make sense that the "swamp benders" are descended from the first water benders, who were also probably neither north nor south. I would assume that before water benders living in the poles would have been too difficult, although it was possible as the southern water tribe seems to be able to sustain their lifestyle without any benders. But to get back onto the point, the swamp benders are spiritually connected to water, regardless if they belong to a tribe or not, they are water benders.

Well, the swamp is so deep and treacherous to go through. Also, the Swamp Tribe(I think mostly Huu) tries their best to protect the swamp from people like the Firebenders, thus driving them away from their location.

I don't think so. It's more than likely that they just branched off from the Water Tribe centuries ago and have developed their own thing.

There are nations within nations in our world.

The Vatican is technically it's own country, within another country. It is small but has it's own laws, system of government, and money.

Also, if you're going to consider the Southern Water Tribe, which almost completely abandoned, a full sized nation, I'd agree that the Swamp Tribe is just as valid a nation in it's own right.

So you're siding with the idea that the Swamp Tribe is its own nation but simply resides in the Earth Kingdom, very much like the Northern Air Temple?

    In a way.

The idea of a nation or part of a nation within another nation is hardly unheard of.

Nations have seperate pieces of land in other people's nations all the time.
