One of the things about Ozai that I've always been curious about, but I know will never be addressed in this series, comes from a single line Iroh says in the very first episode: before he became Firelord, there was a time in Ozai's life where he himself searched for the Avatar.
I think this would make for some interesting (and much needed) backstory for Ozai. Where did he go? What did he learn? Did this adventure involve any crazy battles with enemy forces?
At his core I think he's always been power hungry. But based on the flashbacks and his family's (particularly his wife's and son's) view of him, I think it's safe to say he wasn't always a power hungry jerk. I think his travels may have changed him in a way like the siege of BSS changed Iroh, except in reverse.

I agree. I think it's possible that the search for the Avatar pushed him into this power hungry sociopathy. However, I also think he was already jealous of Iroh, and felt neglected by Azulon, so whatever he did while searching for the Avatar just pushed him further.
As I pointed out in another thread, Ozai was probably very similar to Zuko. He had to work to where he was, whereas Iroh might have been a prodigy (though we don't know that, but since Azulon was, it's possible).
I think Ozai's powerful, but, like Zuko, I think he had to work for it.
I'm going to look for the "Analysing" thread and do a character essay of sortss of Ozai. That family just interests me to no end.

Ooh! That would probably be awesome! The bodyguards or whatever they are wouldn't know what to do if they started to through fireballs.
