And truly if you are going to follow tragic hero plot lines it would make sense like superheros who have to give up the person or persons they love and so on, it would make perfect sense that Aang's calling would prevent him from having love the way he may want it. And in the end he seemed to choose the world over Katara and rightly so. What else could he have chosen? He IS the avatar.
