I didn't get that impression. How did you?
For me, it indeed pointed out that friendships can transcend lifetimes (as is the case with Gyatso & the Avatar) but not that the entire gAang were associated with past avatars. To me, as showed in the ending of The Avatar & The Firelord with the group holding hands, it declared the hope that their friendship would transcend lifetimes to come. I didn't see the implication that any group member was associated with the past. Aang was the reincarnation, Gyatso simply lived a full life & experienced knowing both Avatars.
