Actually I'm starting to think that a skilled firebender could fly but in a much different way from Ozai's feet only style of flying. If you notice Azula's flying when she snuck up on Katara she was using fire from her feet and both of her hands to maintain flight. The arms would also help in direction and stability. Now since we know that Azula is no where near as strong as Ozai is I think its a fair argument that Ozai could fly with his feet and arms all working in unison. Afterall he was strong enough in firebending to shoot lighting in one quick move. So I still think that they can fly but its a very hard thing for them to do without a comet to help give them extra power... and again look at the skill he had at flying... he had to have had experience doing it before because when he was fighting Aang was the only time he ever did it during the comet. |

basic control of their fire. i dont believe that they need to be a master or anything. most firebenders can bend with their feet so just use it as a rocket like azula and ozai im sure most of them can do it |

I agree. I think that they can fly without the comet, but the comet really helped them a lot. Without the comet, I don't think they can fly very well or for very long. Azula was definitely flying in TBR and TSR but she couldn't maintain it for a long time. And judging by the way Ozai was flying, he definitely had some practice BEFORE the comet. |

plus the fact that the air nomads wouldnt fight back much
I was just thinking; If shooting lots of fire can make firebenders fly, then that would mean Newton's (second?) law is in effect (every action has an equal/opposite reaction). What I'm getting at is, why wasn't Ozai sent flying backwards when creating the giant wave of fire?
It's just a cartoon, Koala, you're thinking too hard.

This isn't earth, plus Newton never lived there lol! Didn't you notice people living after falling off a 50 feet wall? |
