I was wondering, since noone ever talks about him except for one slight reference, does the gaang know that Zhao is dead?

The fact that he mysteriously "disappeared" after Koizilla attacked, and nobody has heard from him again, then I think they put that together themselves.
I'd wish they'd mention him at least once (not including in the "The Library") I need some Zhaoness.

Wouldn't it be cool if, during Aang's climatic fight with Ozai, Zhao, having somehow survived, shows up and blasts Aang in the back.

Good point, i doubt they know, i bet they just thought "he probably lost his rank because of the epic phail on the noth pole"

Now, the question is, does Ozai know?

Ozai: Dammit, why hasn't Zhao turn in his monthly report?! ok, that's it, i'm personally going to his office and tell him that he's fired!
*walks in office, screaming is heard, Ozai gets out and there's fire on the room*
General: uh, Fire Lord, Zhao died on the invasion, that was the new guy, Steve
Ozai: oh, send a basket to the family of the poor Steve, may he R.I.P.
General: but, he's still alive
Ozai: *turns suddenly and shoots lighting at the agonizing steve* there we go

anyway, it doesnt really matter if or if they dont know if he died. no real significance to the plot
