Katara is not annoying , she just had to grow up quick because her mothers death. Katara did'nt have a mother to wipe her nose like other characters did , she had to become mom to survive . So that what makes Katara one of my favorite characters, her inner strength.

katara's 1 of my favorite characters. when does she complain? and also, re-watch the runaway. you might get a better understanding of katara's character. i mean, up until aang's discovery, he had a perfect life. and even so, there wasn't a war going on when aang found out he was the avatar. he just knew he was. big whoop. must have been emotionally crushing. i can see him losing his whole people dying must have been horrible (re-watch strom), but again katara helped him through that. and aang just can't stay down for long, it's not his personality. and when he is down, the whole gang comes and gives him emotional pep talks. toph was a spoiled girl who was treated differently because she was blind. must have been hard . but she still found a outlet to her anger or sadness or whatever by doing the earth rumble thing. sokka: again, re-watch runaway. i can see him being depressed about yue, but he still has suki and toph to comfort him . something that really annoys me is that alot of people hate katara just because he was being mean to zuko. no duh! i doubt she would act like nothing had happened. the guy who has been trying to hunt you for quite a while, and helped his sadistic sister kill your best friend, and probably would've tried to kill her too, right after she tried to help him, and then he comes and asks to join the team. how would you react? w/out katara, the gaang would've been screwed. she cooks, she actually does something other than play around like the others, and she keeps them in check. and, her learning wat she learned in the puppetmaster wasn't an advantage. it was to level the playing field. a waterbender in the FIRE nation, sometimes without water. that's fair

Ok sorry to revive this topic but I just felt I had to say something to this post.

"When does she complain"? It's not really complaining but she sure does say "my mom was killed by the fire nation" more than 10 times throughout the story. Um okay? Aang's whole NATION was killed, not to mention some of his best friends from the other nations are either captured, killed or have disappeared 100 years ago. He's lost everything. Plus he's got the whole weight of the WORLD rested on his shoulder. "up until aang's discovery, he had a perfect life" who has NOT had a perfect life before the war? Even Katara and Sokka lead normal happy lives when they were young. Now the only people to not have experienced a good childhood is Toph and Zuko, yet do they complain? No. Zuko is kind of paranoid and does talk about his past at some points, but mostly it's part of the narrative, his own reminiscing. He never complains to outsiders, most of the stories are told through Uncle Iroh's mouth anyways.

You seem to find a reason how the rest of the Aang gang have outlets to help them feel better, that's true, well so does Katara. Everyone likes her, she gets all the attention. She is a prodigy at what she does (someone explains this before and I can't agree more, how she just suddenly masters bloodbending against A PRO, someone who's been doing it for YEARS, um…okay? Seriously even Azula's lightning bending we can see doesn't surpass Uncle Iroh's…Why? WELL DUH Because he's been practicing way more than her? And she's considered a prodigy too.). She does have her places to go when she feels depressed (like the gang, she's not the only one that can say philosophical comforting words, we've seen Aang do it too) yet she still pities herself.

I don't even need to compare Aang to her, maybe he does have a cheerful personality, but that's developed through experience, you shape it yourself. His loss is obviously worse than Katara's, and probably everyone in the whole series…he's lost everything and everyone. Yet he can still be cheerful, now that is TRUE inner strength.

When you compare Toph, simply "she's blind, that must have been hard" is a very unfair statement. Her blindness is not just not being able to see, but rather not being able to make any friends (partly also because she's treated like a puppet), not able to see anything else in the world. She's never even experienced much love in her life. Katara pretty much excels at this part, other than the loss of her mother, who doesn't like her? Who has not given her all their attention? Okay enough said.

Now about her reaction to Zuko, I actually understand this. She opened her heart to him and he betrayed that, it's reasonable she act that way. But Zuko has also lost his mother, he doesn't even know if she's dead/alive yet, and his father hates him. He bares his whole nation's hatred on him (at least Katara is viewed as a Hero), and yet still living honorably, I think this is true inner strength as well. That's why his character will always be better than Katara in my opinion, nothing Katara ever does will change that.

Finally, without Katara, yes the gang would probably be screwed, but the same goes with the absence of any other members of the gang. Everyone is of vital importance, but her I know-it-all bossy motherly attitude annoys me, though she can be compassionate at times.

One thing that annoys me the most is Katara's burning of her hands and running off crying…that was just WAY too much. Toph burned her feet too…not to mention she sees with them, leaving her totally powerless now. Katara can HEAL herself. Yet you don't see Toph crying, and she's even younger. Also as you say how she's "spoiled" and Katara is so "mature" then shouldn't it be Toph crying out loud and not Katara? When they've been through the same situation?

Katara is also selfish. She risks the gang's discovery and safety when she does the whole painted lady crap to saving that fishing town, but when others put the life of the gang on the line, she goes insane…ok Ms sugar queen, you're special so only you can do it =_=? Also she lectures Toph on stealing, oops did we forget she stole the first waterbending scroll and totally talked her way out of it saying it's perfectly fine? Just two examples, I could come up with way more.

To sum this up, up to now, of all the main characters, I think Katara has led the most pleasant life. So whoever makes the excuse of using her loss of her mother to justify her selfish acts makes me laugh. I do acknowledge at times she's right and her motherly actions are heart-warming. But she still annoys me, though I don't downright HATE her. I have way more to say about why she's annoying at times but this reply is already too long…So I'll stop here.

PS: bloodbending is to "level the field"? Uhh...basically everyone's life and freedom is in her hands, who can be more powerful? That's not "leveling the field" (because Fire nation is not water-less, Katara can magically (without practice) suck stuff out of other substances), her bloodbending is almost like...Goku facing.....Bulma or something, it makes her way too powerful and perfect. At her will she can even control the avatar....uh yeah...I have no idea what the creator is thinking creating giving her a technique like this (she can already heal).

I can't belive I just read all of that ^

That was excellent. I couldn't agree with you more. Although all characters, including Katara, have their own flaws, I really like all the characters. Their flaws are what make them really life-like.

^^i...i can't even read all of that. there is no way i can keep a train of thought for that long.

    but anyways KATARA'S BIPOLAR!

every episode there is some sort of emotional issue with her. maybe once every season she may be calm, thats because she probally doesnt have any lines in it. but besides that it's all good

I used to find Katara's outburst annoying. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized; Katara's PMSing! So now, I find them kind of hilarious. Though, I like her exaggerated freak-outs more. Mainly the one from the first episode.

But her more srs out-bursts can be seen as awesome. Her death threat to Zuko was probably the best.

I can see why people would see Katara as annoying. But you have to look at this through her point of view. Her trust is constantly betrayed, and plus, she's a hormonal teenaged girl who has every right to go a little bit overboard.

Ahhh, my favorite thread ever. How I've missed you!

I totally agree with Cloudkillua Overtext. Katara needs a new ability like Sora needs to dual-wield or Naruto needs a second demon in his soul.

In the same amount of episodes it took Aang to get a rough grasp of waterbending, Katara was able to nearly defeat a master. That's where Katara's power creep should have ended, but since then we've seen her reinvent waterbending, save the gang more times that I can count, and learn another ungodly supermove. Not to mention that she's this series Lana Lang and still carries on like she's the greatest thing since filtered water.

The fact that Katara is a water bender is enough for me to like her

Well it depends on what type of charatcers you like, Katara is aimed for the more feminine viewers and is made to be a likeale charatcer which might get on some people's nerves at times. I for one love Katara, she is a sweet heart and can actually kick butt.

"Do I think Katara is annoying?"

    No.

That's it. Sweet, simple and to the point.

At times, yes her outbursts and controlling nature is a tad annoying. But overall I don't find her annoying.

For me, Toph's macho headgames, Sokka's bad jokes, Zuko's angst and Aang's goofing off is far more irritating. But in none of those cases does it really bother me that much...afterall that's the character and all characters need to be flawed in some ways to be believable.

The only time I was really, truly annoyed with Katara was in "The Guru" when Aang was this f-ing close to mastering the Avatar State and he has a vision of her in danger and chooses attachment.

But that wasn't really her fault, and I'm far more annoyed with Aang for that.
