Waterbenders are Inuit which explains their darker skin and hairstyles.

The Guru is clearly Indian from his accent and his looks but is the only representation of the Indians in the entire show.

The rest of the world is clearly the typical "asian" that people think of - Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian or Korean. The only other exception are the Swamp Benders, which are clearly from South Louisiana. Freaks.

And for the record, don't lump asians together and pretend that they are all the Sino-Chinese look-a-likes. Asia encompasses the better part of Russia, goes down to Saudi Arabia, all the way to Vietnam and India, the Phillipines, China, Japan, Korea, etc. etc. etc.. That's half the Middle East (the other half is in N. Africa) and the biggest chunk of land ever. That means Jews, Arabs, Indians, over half the Soviet bloc, and all the rest of that stuff are *Asians*.

Don't real Eskimos look darker too???
But yes they do look a bit to "brownish" too be living in the world of wearing allot of clothes.
Maybe they did it to have all kinds of people to not make it look like they are racist or are making a difference. But there aren't any African people in the entire avatar world too.
Then again there aren't any western (Caucasian, Latino etc) people there either, even aang looks more Chinese then Caucasian. Which means that they just wanted to have asian like people to not start a discussion about their origin.
Besides there could be a whole bunch of people like guru, we just don't know about it, just ask the creators.

India was actually once a seperate continent from Asia, but has been pushing into the mainland for a long time, wich originated the Himilayas, whiich are still growing. That is why it is the sub-continent of Asia. So when referring to Asia, you're are referring to the main continent, not India.

Correction: Avatar is inspired by Buddhist and Hindu (but mainly Buddhist) culture. Saudi Arabia is also in Asia. So are Turkey and Russia.

    ---

But on another note, for people who live as far South as the Pole, have you noticed how dark Sokka and Katara's skins are? They have quite a North Indian/Arab skin colour. Toph, from a warmer climate, is fairer than both of them.
Probably because the waterbenders originated from tropical areas. Swampbenders, for example.

    Pure speculation, BTW.
It doesn't seem to work like that in the avatar world. The tropical area of the Avatar world would be the fire nation and a part of the earth kingdom. But the people from the fire nation have fair skin, at least most of them. Poeple from the water tribes have tan skin, but also have blue or grayish blue eyes. Is there a race in this world with that combination? because I must admit cultures and history is not my strength. My question is... what nation do you think the Guru is from? We know he's not from the Air Nomads but he doesn't fit with the poeple of the fire nation. He also doesn't appears to be from the Water Nation. The earth nation has more diversity so my guess is he's from this one.

Have you seen the Inuits? They have dark skin. Anyway, the swampbenders are the people who decided to stay in the middle during the time waterbenders made the migration from North to South.

I think the main purpose of eye color is to determine which nation the person is from. Of course there are some people who are different (such as Ty Lee or the swampbenders), but mostly, the eye color follows this pattern:

Water - blue (are there any other eye colors? I don't remember)

    Earth - green or brown

    Fire - red

    Air - grey

    Or something like that.

the people of the 4 nations are unique

    but...............

Bryke has taken elements from different parts of the world

most obvious are Japanese and Chinese, lot of other regions around there "martial arts" wise

also a lot from India-Pakistan area and Nepal-Tibet area (airbenders), we also got a lot of Inuit elements, some Arabians(Sandbenders)and some southern USA (swamp people language) and some Amazonian(swamp people culture), also some hints of Brazil(beach with their "kick-volley" similar game and a small dose of martial arts), and we could think of "the library" as small hints of Greek culture

Yeah. It's because of the reflective capabilities of snow and the fact there's no shade in polar envirmoents. That means they're exposed to sunight so this gives them dark skin.

Anyway, the swampbenders probably became pale since there's not much sunlight in a swamp because of the tree cover. They must have been living in the swamp for hundred or thousands of years for their natural sking colour to become so pale. This probably matches up with the idea that they hadn't had any contact with the other waterbenders and were unaware of them.
