I have watched the end of The Boiling Rock a few times now and really think Ty Lee got shorted. Mai committed an active and deliberate betrayal but Ty Lee just didn't want to see one of her friends get killed. Afterwards, she realized what she had done. I think that if Azula hadn't gone after Mai then Ty lee would have stuck by Azula. I am sure that in future episodes this will all be played out but right now there is nothing to suggest Ty Lee was acting on anything but instinct and adrenaline.

I'm not flaming you, but I want to point you to this thread:

    http://www.tv.com/avatar-the-last-airbender/show/28841/boiling-rock-discussion--massive-spoilers---enter-at-own-risk/topic/13281-1053134/msgs.html?tag=board_topics;title;5

This is for the Boiling Rock, as to prevent people who haven't watched it from being spoiled without fair warning.

Yes, you'd better delete this thread before you spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen TBR yet.

You should also delete it because of the spoiler risk, and because the mods are in a rather ban-happy mood lately.

actually as the basis of "allowing or not" an episode as "no need of spoiler tags" is that it is available in the USA "officially"

and since from April 24th the DVD 3 was available "officially", there is no need anymore of being scared of 312 to 315

this thread most probably is highlord approved (but I can't assume as fact yet)

I think at first was instinct, but after the fact she felt that what she did was the correct thing even if it was not done deliberately or after some thought

I think that when she saw that Azula was willing to kill her best friend, she went against her.

I reckon she did go on impulse but if she knew in advance that Azula was trying to kill Mai, she'd stil go against her. Ty Lee's a good Fire Nation girl

In my opinion Ty Lee made her choice based on the the statement the azula made about how Mai should have feared her more this statement made Ty Lee realize that azula can turn on her as well for not being correctly on her side 100% of the time.

I think this thread would need spoilers because it never aired on TV....although..it most likely never will...

I think it is very revealing for Ty Lee. It was an instinctive choice, which is actually more revealing than a calculated choice.

Ty Lee either loves and cares about Mai more, or it was instinct. She would either be angry at Mai for getting them arrested, or they would stick together. My guess is that she starts to see how she should not be afraid of Azula. Remember, back in Return to Omashu, that Ty Lee never wanted to be a part of Azula's group. And you can tell how she was so fake with Azula (pretending to look up to her, showering her with compliments). It was as if she was afraid of being attacked by Azula. Notice how in The Beach, Ty Lee screamed at Zuko and Mai, but not Azula.

I'm hoping it was out of "instinct" or kind of involuntary for her. We all know she never wants to see people hurt (truly hurt or worse, dead) so she probably knew that Azula was more dangerous than Mai. I think this can go either way though; we can only guess what was going on in her head. Hopefully we find out in upcoming episodes. [/optimism]

I doubt it. Ty Lee is a bubble ol' airhead(NO she's not an Aibender). That was proably a spontaneous move on her part that suprised even her.

    Here's a picture:

    ***SPOILER***
You're right, Eman. Look how 'oblivious' and innocent she is to what she just did. ;p
