I'm wondering, can the Avatar be evil? You know refuse to fulfill his/her destiny (To protect/save the world) and use his/her powers for conquest?

Well the Avatar is the reincarnation of himself. So unless the first Avatar was evil, I doubt any of the following Avatars could.

i guess if the avatar was persuaded or willed to become a member of the enimie then the avatar could be considered evil hopefully it will never come to that

I suppose an avatar could be...it makes sense if you think about it

i guess he can be, but maybe the past avatars would make an end to his way of life, or even his life. if they take the second option, the avatar will reincarnate again, and hopefully be a better version then his last one. i dunno if the previous avatars are strong enough to defeat the current avatar though... maybe he cant, but then again, they would be able to force him into the avatar state and take him over (cause in the avatar state, the avatar is in direct influence and connection with his previous lifes). i dont think its likely that the avatar gets ''evil'' though... why would he? i mean, he has complete temples for his own, and people worship him... seriously, if the avatar wants something, he'll get it anyway, he wont have to get evil by killing people for that.

in this case its a bit different though, cause people lost their respect for the avatar cause he hasnt done his job in protecting the world.

I'm positive he/she could be. If the avatar was brought up when the Fire Nation was taking over the world, then he'd probably be brought up to help the Fire Nation. So he would probably do that and turn evil. Or he would just run away and try to stop. But hey I say go for it!!!

im not so sure about that... the avatar has a born need for balance in the world and peace.
like i said, the previous avatars are watching out for eachother. this means that they would try to get away from this bad influence by taking the avatar, when he's still very young, to a safe place.

each Avatar is technically the same person (Aang reincarnates)

and its seems that the Avatar has been good in all of his past lifes for hundreds and hundreds of year...it would take a lot to make him go bad

If an Avatar was born into the Fire Nation in the middle of their war then they'd use the Avatar as their weapon...

If you think a little harder you will remember that the job of the avatar is to balance everything, in the recent avatar world the fire nation is controling everything, thats why aang is helping the oder nations, but his job makes him do stay as a neutral element, and not an evil or good guy...

thats only a theory I'm not saying that the avatar couldn't be evil...

I think it plays into a cycle. Do firebenders see themselves as evil? They might think their cause is to make the world better or something. Therefore if the avatar was brought up in teh fire nation, what he thought was right may be seen as wrong, hence evil. So really the avatar can't be good or evil, its just teh way peopel think of him as. A fire nation child might see him as evil, hurting their way of life, while a water tribe clihd might see him as good, improving their lives.

So in conclusion, no persons good or bad, its just a perception from one person to the next. so really there is no answer.?? glad i could help

Aang has 3 life times (His, Water tribe thingy. and Earth tribe thingy) to stop the war. When the fire nati. gets the avatar, it's downhill 4 the world and uphill for the fire nati.

Unless they accidentally kill him. Then all they'd have to search for him AGAIN......

Unless they killed him in the Avatar state and he ceased to exist. THEN they'd hvae reason to rejoice...

The Avatar is the manifestation of the planet's spirit in human form. And the planet itself is undoubtedly benevolent, which is a universal concept inside and outside the Avatar universe. Therefore, an Avatar can't be "evil".

Life times? That'd defeat one of the main challenges that Aang is facing in the show. He has several seasons, and his time will be up at the end of summer (the season that represents fire, no less).

All the Fire Nation needs to do is kill Aang. Then invade the Water Tribes and kill every baby born. Then go invade the Earth Kingdom and repeat the same process...cept it going to be hell harder because the EK is freakin' huge. It they manage to kill the EK avatar, then they'll have a Fire Nation avatar and they'll be able to force him into believing the Fire Nation is superior.

I hope I only have to say this one more time.

The Avatar is a TOOL of BALANCE. He's only fighting evil because it's overwhelmed the world. He restores order to chaos and fights one side down. He isn't the yin, he isn't the yang. He himself is perfect harmony. It's the Avatar's job to beat back the darkness if there's too much. If there was too much light in the world, he'd have to stop that too. So, no the Avatar can not be evil and also can not be a force of good. He can only play the advocate.

The avatar could be "evil" but only if he harms things that seem good to him/her. In his/her eyes he/she will never do an evil thing.
