how did in the??Lake Laigie (is that how its spelled) did toph destroy earth hands in air if they weren't connected to the ground for her to feal the vibrations

she felt the vibrations of who shot them and could tell where they were coming from

She could feel the vibrations from when the 'benders made them, and guess/figured the spot they were coming from. Also, she can feel earth and all sorts of vibrations, and who's to say she can't feel changes in air pressure too, which would probably have been disturbed by the flying rock-gloves.

Also, the hand-things were made of rock, so she might have just felt them anyway.

Alright listen, maybe the hands were in the air, but she could still "feel" them because she can control earth.

It's just like a waterbender can "feel" the push and pull of water even when it's not touching them.

The rock hands came towards here, and she could feel it because when she used her power she could feel the matter's resistance. She could "feel" that there was something controlable in the air, thus she could control it.

I suspect the same is true with firebenders too; since they can control fire they can feel it through their power, and thus manipulate it.

With airbenders it might be different because they are ALWAYS touching air (except when entirely underwater).

How about the already confirmed ADVANCED HEARING might come into play? I mean, really. Think.

I got it! Toph makes these ultra-sonic clicking noises with her teeth only audible her (as well as rodents and cetaceans) she then uses the echoes of the sound bouncing off people and objects to track their position, movement and speed via Doppler shift. Did I mention she also sleeps upside-down?

not heard approaching, FELT approaching... people, shes a freakin' earth bender! she can feel and notice earth when its close. there hasnt been said a word about a super-natural hearing talent of Toph. during ''The Drill'' Toph helped Katara bending the mud back into the drill making the thing almost explode right? she wasnt in contact with this water/earth mix, was she? still she could bend it... also the mix sounded like water, so if she wouldnt feel there was earth in it, she would be at least surprised when she got the request of Katara to help her bend it.

thats true, the fire benders are talking about breathcontroll all the time. and not to forget, bending fire with emotions (Iroh told that when he tried to explain u shouldnt use emotions when casting lightning as u would with fire bending). the fire also only comes out of their limbs... maybe theres some physical action taking place when they r fire bending/creating fire?
