The bender is Roku's earthbending master. This is alluded to several times in the episode.

    they are subtle but many.

    1) when Roku says the training was bitter work.Iconcede it can just refer to kung fu being the translation of bitter work. but when he describes his masterthe description fit toph as well.

    2) The bender in the opening was intended to be toph. Literally he was the first incarnation of toph.

    3) The bender was toph in a previous life. Toph asks if friendships can span generations. This is a metaphorical representation of the original character design's intended use.

    4) Zuko's inevitable friendship with aangmirrors this idea

    just a theory.

I t thought the whole original dizinefor Toph being Roku's teacher was a nice little detail.

I'm not sure about everything there, but you're probbaly right that Toph knew Roku at some point. I can't wait to see what happens there.

Not toph per se but the character intended to be toph. If the creators couldn't make the characterthe presentavatar's teacher they decided to make it the former avatar's teacher. However I think that Toph may be the reincarnation of that guy. Literally and metaphorically.

Gyatso was teacher of both Roku and Aang

I think there is a chance that

Roku's water master is Dad of Gran Gran
    Seth(earthbender) is great-grandfather of Toph

there is no way gyatso taught roku, he was younger than roku, and wasnt a master (no tattoos). the waterbending teacher lookked more like chief arnook (was that his name? ), but i cant argue with the whole toph being reincarnated thing, though in a way it is the most ludicrous

    Katara teaches Aang
    Toph teaches Aang

why couldn't young Gyatso teach Roku?

I have noticed that it seems that in both cases of Aang and Roku(maybe other avatars too?) their teacher of other elements besides their natural one seem to be same age or just a few years apart

    Aang froze at 12
    Roku died at 58
Gyatso was not older than 70 years in age at the time Aang was frozen for 100 years

Gyatso met Roku when Roku was 16, as the first element Roku learned(after Fire) was Air

like i already said, gyatso looked younger than roku, and also, he wasnt a master of air, or at least i assume this is the case as he has no tattoos in the falshback. why would a child that is not a bending master teach the avatar. roku just said they were friends, thats all

I do not believe Gyatso trained Roku. It seemed like all of those students were in a class. and roku and gyatso were friends in the class. Also, airbending masters recieve tatoos. and gyatso did not have his yet. the avatar has to be taught by masters.

Gyatso didnt teach Roku! If you see carefully there was a airbender wearing a robwb who had his glider wif him and flew off.So all of Roku's teacher was a guy
