I'd like to know why, in all these major fantasy stories, why is it always set with most people wearing robes/guys having long flowing hair? Avatar; Iroh, Roku, Pakku, Ozai (hair, not robes), Zuko (season one, hair), Gyatso (robes, no hair), the two guys hunting toph, in Harry Potter; Dumbledore, Sirius Black, Lucius Malfoy, etc., and in LOTR and SW (not as familiar with these two, but i've seen pictures and know obi wan kanobe has long hair (o am I thinking of han solo)) They're not taking place in the past as much as they are taking place in paralelle universes. Star Wars doesn't even resemble mideival cultures the way the others do and it has main characters wearing hooded robes. Why is Harry Potter even modeled after an older style culture with torches for lighting (as opposed to magic orbs or some other wizard-type thing) and everyone wearing robes? And how come so many guys have long hair in all four as well? What's with the trend of long hair and robes. It gets on my nerves, don't ask why, it just does. Why do so many have robes and long hair? Is it to look pretty or something? Why?

Obi-Wan never really had long, long hair, it was shoulder legnth in ATOC, and Harry Potter is different then most wizarding things, well I don't know why but I guess J.K. Rowling wan't to do something different, and I guess guys didn't get hair cuts back then.

because the long hair and the robes were normal in the ''ancient times''. these times were the times where all our current bed-time stories come from, so thats why wizards and evil witches always wear robes, and often have long hair. because of this, people often make characters in (animation) series/movies wear robes and have long hair... its pretty logical if u think about it...
ofcourse these things almost only happen in fantasy stories, cause these stories often happen in the past, or there are characters who have some sort of 'magical abilities'' (like bending in Avatar, using ''The Force'' in Star Wars, or the magic in Harry Potter).

maybe i helped you, or maybe i didnt (srry for my bad english in this post... im really tired )

Okay thanks, so you're saying it's used for "magical characters" because all the original stories of "magical characters" came from ancient times where they wore robes?

And also, why did everyone wear robes and have long hair back then . . . or perhaps I should be asking why did we switch to pants with most guys with short hair in the past 200 years? I've always wondered this

Okay, then Han Solo, or maybe it was neither and i'm thinking of someone else. I don't know SW characters that well, at least I know what george lucas looks like-I MEAN Luke Skywalker . . . Why did the director give the main character such a similar name to himself? For most of my life I thought George Lucas was a Star Wars character . . .

??the hair, it was just normal back then... i mean, why not? about the robes, well... they didnt have the possibility and resources back then to create other things then that. dont forget that creating jeans isnt very easy rofl. ow and btw, not everyones wearing a pants with short??hair these days. there are still a lot of countries around the world where its normal to wear the traditional clothes. still i admit that wearing a pants with short hair is more practical then long hair with a robe, i guess thats why most people ''switched'' to pants and more pratical clothes.

    You have a point, thanks

Although what's your explaination as to why, in the western world and europe, only half the population switched to practical (most males)?

[/QUOTE]Han had 70s hairstyle. And peopled stopped wearing robes...when the spinning wheel was invented. Making it easier to make better clothing.

why are certain countries more advanced then others? i dont really know, its very complicated. but i do think that certain countries think that traditions are more important then other people think it is. that would partly explain the thing i guess.

Robes also defined who you were in a society. They denoted royalty, peasantry, religious orders. Plus robes could be worn in layers to keep you warm. The wearing of robes probably started with the Greek/Roman toga that citizens wore and was adapted for life in northern Europe. Silk robes in China and Japan go waaaay back. Kimonos, etc. And yes, they were easy to make.

I'm not a clothing expert, but clothing seems to fit with the times. Americans used to wear beaver pelts and bearskins. Now that it's a lot warmer here, we don't need such things.
