Inside the Volcanic fortress, all seemed well. But tension was running high inside. Tsaya was wondering how slaves kept escaping when she had their leader in a cage. She still had about five hundred, but in a few days, even that number would decrease. She went to sleep with a mind to put an end to it all the next day. And she would have, too, if she hadn't awakened to the sound of the warning bell. She dashed aout of bed and looked out the window to find a small army had broken through the outer wall. The fortress had seven left, and it would take a while to break through the others, so she used this time to rally her forces and send them to face the enemy. In a few minutes she was out there as well, decked out in fine armor and with her obsidian claw ready, only to find that the walls had all been demolished. She immediately dashed into the fray, her left hand brutalizing any enemy faces, appendages, and abdominal cavities that stood in her way. She reminded herself to return and find a spleen for her "collection."

Suddenly, as quickly as the attack started, it ended. The enemy fled toward the shore. She sent a batallion of her lavabenders to pursue, and ordered another group to begin repairs on the walls.

After cleansing herself, she called Dak and his assistant Hawjo to her chamber. They bowed before her.

Tsaya: Oh, get up!

They stood at attention. Eight guards were in the chamber as well, along with Vuln and Kar. Tsaya was obviously angry. Bai Mao, in disguise, knew his plan had worked.

Tsaya: Tell me did an army of earthbenders, similar to the ones that were described to me three days ago, find its way to my doorstep? Second, how did the slaves escape with said army that SHOULDN'T EVEN BE HERE!

B'ao: Because we lied.

Everything went silent. "Hawjo" Was supposed to be mute. He removed his eyepatch and the rubber "scar tissue" from his face, then smiled. There Stood Bai Mao. Kar went rigid when he saw the mark that he inflicted on this young man's neck. This young man who held a grudge, and was twisted enough to do anything to slake his bloodthirst.

B'ao: Hello. Pleasure to meet you.

He smiled, then snapped his fingers. Two earthbenders hiding in the walls leapt out and covered him and Dak as they ran from the room. They detoured into Vuln's chamber and ran through the back room, filled with all manner of weapons. They hurried through the maze of walls, searching for Bai Mao's most valuable possession: his pudao. He hoped he would be provided enough cover. Sadly, hope was useless here, as he almost ran straight into Vuln. As he turned, he saw Vuln's hands glow slightly, the sign that a fire blast was imminent. He leapt up a wall, grabbing a water Tribe whale tooth spear that was positioned horizontally, then pushed against the wall with his legs and flipped backwards. As he reached the height of the arc, the fireball grazed his back, and Bai Mao was burned even with his increased body heat. He caught an empty hook for some other weapon and leapt off the wall, blasting with both fists at the old man. Vuln simply blocked it with his hand and it dissipated. He took this time to gloat to the smoky air

Vuln: You really thought that your feeble blast could could possibly-

POW! Bai Mao's foot flew across his face and he stumbled back, with Bai Mao calling back some advice as he ran to the next aisle.

B'ao: Gloating is done best over a dead body!

As Bai Mao raced down the aisle, his instincts told him to turn. Vuln had already recovered and was sending another incredibly hot blast. Bai Mao stuck his hands out and tried to contain it, but found himself pushed back. He was sweating profusely, finally realizing what he was up against. Just when he reached his limit, the blast stopped. Bai Mao glanced up to see Dak.

Dak: Go! I'll hold him!

Bai Mao ran through the halls of the chamber, searching for his weapon, the sounds of battle in his ears. Finally, after a few minutes of searching, he found his treasured weapon. He raced back toward the door. Luckily Vuln had his back to him, leaving him wide open to a kick to the back of the skull. Dak and Bai Mao headed for the dungeons next.

Meanwhile, Tsaya and Kar were busy with their own battle. Gweh and Yonhi had been told to keep them busy. The twin earthbenders fought as one unit; not attack breached Gweh's defense, while Yonhi's accuracy scored several hits. Kar's blade whip slapped a few sharp projectiles from the air as he slashed the air, sending an arc of fire at the older twin. Gweh came out of nowhere and blocked it with the crystal shield on his arm, which then flew sideways into Kar's gut. He doubled over as Tsaya covered him, knocking more bladed stars out of the air with her black claw. She raced toward Yonhi with her claw ready to slash through his throat, until it stopped inches from him.

Yonhi: If I'm correct, that would be obsidian, an igneous glass. And I would happen to be an earthbender.

Tsaya's own claws raised up to stare her in the face while still attatched to her left hand. They formed a fist and flew into her gut, then right up her chin. Yonhi was tempted to say "stop hitting yourself," but he resisted the urge. He didn't see Kar come up behind him, and was shocked when He felt the heat from several glowing coals light up his leg. Yonhi reached down in surprise and recieved a nasty burn on each palm. Kar's whip was wrapped tightly around his calf, the lava rocks glowing brighly enough to light three rooms. Yonhi lost his concentration and yelled in agony. Gweh came to his rescue, bulling into Kar and sending him flying. He gently unwrapped the bladed whip from his brother's leg.

Yonhi: Gweh, look out!

It was too late. Tsaya had gotten up and, after melting her useless claw, grabbed a sword from above her bed and drove it straight into Gweh. He grunted as he felt it, but he didn't fall. Then they heard the signal, and eagle's shriek. Tsaya looked out the window and saw the entire earthbender army at her gate, with Bai Mao, Dak, and Rieji heading toward it. Gweh, still high on adrenaline, took the time to pick up his brother and leap out the window, softening the landing. Tsaya roused Kar.

Tsaya: Get twenty guards and get to the top of the volcano. We'll show them a war.

Kar knew what the order meant. He immediately set out to do so. Tsaya stayed back. She knew what was coming.

Bai Mao and Rieji were fighting back-to-back, surrounded on all sides. The duo made light work of the small group, however, and cleared a path to escape.

B'ao: Okay, let's go.

Rieji: Huh?

B'ao: It was a distraction so I could break you out. We're headed to the beach to regroup. I'll sound the retreat.

Rieji: Can it wait ten more minutes? I've got to get something.

B'ao: What?

Rieji held up the broken dagger handle on her neck. Bai Mao understood and nodded. She sped up the stairs to Tsaya's chamber, into the private room with the grisly collection. The door slammed behind her.

Tsaya: Hello there.

Bai Mao was battling with all his might, waiting for Rieji's return. It wouldn't have mattered, for at that moment, the very ground seemed to shake, and he heard a large explosion. He turned and saw the volcano erupt and realized the massive oversight he had made. He yelled at the top of his voice.

B'ao: RETREAT! RETREAT NOW!

The army started running too late. Some at the back of the horde were incinerated by the burning lava, even as Vuln's army began using their skills to cover themselves in the stuff. A few of the earthbenders made a shield, but it was weakened by the second as lava and fire hit it. Tsaya had managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Bai Mao knew what he had to do. His duty was to his fellow tribesmen first.

B'ao: Any who are willing to lay down their life for the others to escape, join me. The rest of you, tunnel out and head for the beach.

A soldier piped up.

Soldier: But you're leading the mission! You can't die here.

B'ao: It was my oversight. Dak is now your leader. Follow him to battle and avenge us.

The soldiers, even the ones who were ready to die, seemed to take offense to this. After all, Dak wasn't from their tribe. He wasn't fit to lead. They stood their ground until Bai Mao joined the escapers' side. Bai Mao addressed those who would sacrifice themselves as the others bended the escape tunnel.

B'ao: May the spirits reward your courage and honor as you fall. I will return here, and see that your deaths do not go unpunished.

Bai Mao leapt into the tunnel, as someone began to fight his way out, pushing against the tide.

Burai: NO! STOP!

Bai Mao turned. Gweh was pushing his way through to join the sacrificed battalion, a sword sticking from his side. His fiancee, Burai, was pleading with him. Gweh turned for a second and gave Bai Mao a glance.

Burai: No! Don't leave! You can't! We can heal you. Come with us.

(Gasp) somebody posted... there is a god.
