Think those first two post summed it all up. And even though it probably was a goof (or whatever ya call it),??what's to say he didn't have another, I mean that machete basically came out of nowhere.

Yes, since when can people manipulate elements, since when are ostrich horses real, so its all fair game. So now in the Avatar world, comets are made of fire, or at least give firebenders super strength.
