well, when Sozin said that, wasn't he standing on a boat? I was under the impression that he was talking about he was 100 miles away from Roku's island, but on his boat, not from the palace.

    oops actually it is

Maybe it's just a plot hole. I.e. An ACTUAL mistake... According to that map... no way the Avatar World is 550 miles in diameter. -_-'

i doubt that the avatar world is that small to but its just a mistake made by the creators in the avatar and the firelord.

what if theres a whole other side of the avatar globe?

Since humans can only see 5 to 7 miles toward the horizon when standing at sea level, and we don't know how tall the balcony is that Sozin is standing on, it may be even less than 100 miles since Sozin can see the volcano, which would make the Avatar world even smaller. But if it was smaller, the curvature of the planet would be even more apparent and would hugely lessen the line of sight.

I say that Sozin has no idea how far away the island is and just threw a random number in the air.

i doubt it. he probably gave an estimate. also:

the balcony is obviously higher than sea level.

I have to say, even if the milage of the Avatar world doesn't make sense... how do you have enough free time to measure it all out on a map?

Sozin's line of sight approximates to 35,701 meters, or 22.184 miles. Soooo.... yeah. The Avatar world is a bit downsized. Either that or the palace is really really tall.

To clarify things, for everyone that may be wondering how I determined the Avatar World hkulka2974 is correct on my method. I pretty much estimated, but I have to say that tomtitan is more accurate in his/her measuring than I was, so when I said "Avatar World is probably no larger then the state of Washington" that's probably not that accurate, since is probably bigger (length and width wise) but the point was more that if the quote from episode 306 (The Avatar and the Firelord) "Ruko's island was 100 miles away but I could still feel it rumbleing..." is correct then the Avatar World is really small... .. .

well, when Sozin said that, wasn't he standing on a boat? I was under the impression that he was talking about he was 100 miles away from Roku's island, but on his boat, not from the palace.

I just checked, no, he wasn't on a boat, but nothing says that he was in his palace either. All we see is that he is standing on some kind of balcony.

the balcony he was standing on was in the capital most probably

Since humans can only see 5 to 7 miles toward the horizon when standing at sea level, and we don't know how tall the balcony is that Sozin is standing on, it may be even less than 100 miles since Sozin can see the volcano, which would make the Avatar world even smaller. But if it was smaller, the curvature of the planet would be even more apparent and would hugely lessen the line of sight.

I say that Sozin has no idea how far away the island is and just threw a random number in the air.

i doubt it. he probably gave an estimate. also:

the balcony is obviously higher than sea level.

    it was a clear day.

    it was night

the volcano made a huge explosion

Hmmmm... I'm going to do the math. How high do you think the palace balcony is in meters?

idk the fire nation palace is pretty tall. i'd say possibly over a 100

Sozin's line of sight approximates to 35,701 meters, or 22.184 miles. Soooo.... yeah. The Avatar world is a bit downsized. Either that or the palace is really really tall.

sozin:whats that white stuff beyond the sea

palace guard:its the end of the world sir.
