I pretty much estimated, but I have to say that tomtitan is more accurate in his/her measuring than I was, so when I said "Avatar World is probably no larger then the state of Washington" that's probably not that accurate, since is probably bigger (length and width wise) but the point was more that if the quote from episode 306 (The Avatar and the Firelord) "Ruko's island was 100 miles away but I could still feel it rumbleing..." is correct then the Avatar World is really small... .. .

well, when Sozin said that, wasn't he standing on a boat? I was under the impression that he was talking about he was 100 miles away from Roku's island, but on his boat, not from the palace.

I just checked, no, he wasn't on a boat, but nothing says that he was in his palace either. All we see is that he is standing on some kind of balcony.

the balcony he was standing on was in the capital most probably

Since humans can only see 5 to 7 miles toward the horizon when standing at sea level, and we don't know how tall the balcony is that Sozin is standing on, it may be even less than 100 miles since Sozin can see the volcano, which would make the Avatar world even smaller. But if it was smaller, the curvature of the planet would be even more apparent and would hugely lessen the line of sight.

I say that Sozin has no idea how far away the island is and just threw a random number in the air.

i doubt it. he probably gave an estimate. also:

the balcony is obviously higher than sea level.

    it was a clear day.

    it was night

the volcano made a huge explosion

Hmmmm... I'm going to do the math. How high do you think the palace balcony is in meters?

idk the fire nation palace is pretty tall. i'd say possibly over a 100

that balcony looked like a boat to me when i saw this epi....lol

nearly all the fire nation boats that i've seen have been made in black metal

Come on guys seriously look at the picture! does it look like he is at the Fire Nation capital? My guess would be that he is at Ember Island..

    He's definately on Ember Island:

The palace is in the center, and where Sozin is, the ocean is right below him:

Even so, he still couldn't see 100 miles unless he was on a 1500 foot building, which is taller than the Empire State Building.

You all realize, the highest point in the capitol city isn't any taller than the ring of land around it. It's obviously impossible for him to see nothing but sea from the palace.

    What if... (wait for it)

    The Avatar world is flat?

We know that it has identical seasons, despite what hemisphere you are in. It also has frozen poles, but day and night cycles regularly there. Perhaps it is something of an Ancient Greek theory type world.

Nah, Sozin would be able to see everything, all the way to the other side. Maybe everyone thinks it's flat, since it never occured to Sokka that they could invade from the back of the Earth Kindom or the Eastern Air Temple to the back of the Fire Nation using Earthbenders to climb up and over. Unless.... of course.... there's more land to be discovered...

This is the author/creator of this forum. I have read over what different people have been putting, and lets say I was wrong and it was Ember Island that the Fire Lord was at instead, but that still means using the most liberal estimates that the Avatar World is still less than 3000 miles which is about the distance from Portland OR to Portland MA. Anyways (again) the point is more that the Avatar World is really small... .. .

By-the-way it great that people are getting into this forum, but the point of this forum was not just to talk about one or two concepts but about the fact and/or mistakes of the series in general and overall, but please still keep debating each other as much as you want.

wiseone_777, you actually make a very good point, so lets say your right, and using both the maps provided by nick.com/avatar (looking at the closes island on that map) and the map tomtitan provided (Re: #12) It would say that each line (on tomtitan's map) would still probably only be about 1000 miles making the circumference about 5,500 miles which is a little more than 80% of the moon's circumference (6790 miles). So Again if your right then the Avatar World would actually be somewhat a realistic size, though still quite smaller than Earth, which I would guess many people would have thought the Avatar World was the same size (more-or-less) as Earth.

Let's say he was on mber island, then let's do the math from there, and let's say hypotethically than there was such thing as a really tall building in an already high mount then Sozin could see up to 60 miles and the huge eruption of the Volcano somehow made the smoke to be seen and then Rokku's island is 100 miles away of Ember island...What is the size of the Avatar world...And even more intriguing is there a New World to be found in the Avatar world?

If they can build Imperial ships of iron and journey the distance of the poles from boat, there CAN'T BE A "NEW WORLD" Not to be insulting, but you guys are thinking so deeply thay you overlook the things that actually reveal.
