I don't think Jet and the other Freedom Fighters' names are really those. It's like the lost boys; they gave themselves nicknames to establish themselves.
And Tom Tom might be a nickname too. Why would they name their daughter, Mai, and their son Tom Tom?
I'm just saying, Avatar takes place in a Pseudo-Asian world, so why wouldn't Jun's name be Jun instead of June? I know what I just said isn't going to change your mind, just listen to the reason why I like Jun instead of June. You can have your reasons, and I can have mine.

It doesn't matter if those are their real names or not. If this show was strictly Pseudo-Asia, their nicknames would still be spelled 'Asian-y.' Not to mention there would be 5 elements instead of 4. This show draws ideas from many cultures, not just China. Heck, the FN landscape is based on Iceland.
And as for your question: because the creators said so. As I said before: official source > fan preference.

They can't have him doing it in the epilogue, that is too late to apologize.
