The Avatar??is capable of bending all four elements.????Is someone who isn't the Avatar capable of using more than one element??? Is??the??"bending" gene specific to each population so that only a child of Earth Kingdom residents can bend Earth??? Perhaps if a Fire Nation man and an Earth nation woman has a child is it possible that it could bend both??elements??? It seems we should see some people like this at some point since some interbreed must occur somewhere on the fringes.?? Lavabenders would be most interesting, Fire to make it and Earth to move it.?? This may??not work is if the gene has several different alleles (one for each type of element, one for no bending, and the "mutant"Avatar gene) thus there is no version of that gene excepting the Avatar that would grant dual-powers.?? I wonder what the Avatar's children would be like??? It could be quite interesting if he propagates with another bender since that would possibly increase the chance of a bending child, and maybe a dual-bender.

You know, maybe bending is like recessive and dominant genes. If the gene for firebending is dominant over the earthbending gene, then maybe the child of one person from the fire nation, and soeone from the earth kingdom would turn out to be a firebender, since the firebending gene would be dominant. or vice versa and stuff with the other elements too.

I have thought about all of the possible hybrids, and I came up with these solutions. Some need a little more thought though:
    Air+Water=Cloudbender
    Air+Earth=Sanbender
    Air+Fire=Gasbender
    Water+Earth=Mudbender
    Water+Fire=Oilbender
    Earth+Fire=Lavabender
    Air+Water+Earth=Lifebender
    Air+Water+Fire=Steambender
    Air+Earth+Fire=Smokebender
    Water+Earth+Fire=Sludgebender
    Air+Water+Earth+Fire=Elementbender(other than Avatar)

it has to be atleast partially genetic or there would be Earthbenders being born in the Fire Nation,??so it's a possibility for someone born to an Air n Waterbender *cough* Aang n Katara's kid *cough* could bend both...

It's possible that the child will take after a particular parent.?? I know that the first child a woman has tends to lean towards the father's side of the family the more children she has the more they lean towards the mother's side.????

Well we haven't seen anyone who can bend more than one element, this question has popped up a few times and the answer is that we'll have to just wait and see. Now first off I gotta tell you that the ability to bend or what element you bend isn't based on genetics. In The Fortuneteller episode we saw a set of twins, one who was an earthbender, and one who was not. Because twins have the same genetic code, we can safetly assume its not solely based on genetics. Now don't forget that in order to learn a certain bending displine in the first place you need a teacher. Learning a bending disipline is EXTREMELY time consuming and a lot of hard work. Most people are too busy providing for their family or themselves to learn bending, don't forget the entire world is at war, things are a little hecktic right now. This could also explain why there are no random benders popping up in other parts of the world. There are no earthbending teachers in the firenation to teach an earthbender, or firebender in the waternation to teach a young firebender etc. Also, that little extra "thing" that you need to be a bender is belief. Simply the belief that you can do it and want to do it aka Kitara. Well that my 2 cents.

    That's just dumb.
And why exactly would there be a point of the Avatar when there are other people who can bend all four elements??
    An Oil bender?????

maybe , if it were a boy it would have his father's bending powers and if it were a girl it would have her mother's bending skills! but only if the child was born with bending skills that is!

I feel that "Bending" is not a genetic trait.

Think about it, In "the fortuneteller", there are twins, one of whom can earthbend.

Also, screw the boy gets father's bending and girl gets mom's, coz Ursa wasn't a firebender and Azula still became one. Plus, even with Katara and Sokka, their parents were benders while Sokka ended up "normal".

So I think its just chance.

    i agree...i really doubt it's genetic
there are a lot of real, physical aspects to this show, but the creators are constantly addressing the point that there are mystical/magical elements (no pun intended) as well, and "genetics" seems to be taking it a little to literally

If i would take the time i would've explained that genetics is possible.... but not in the mood

    and about those twins...
if they look the same doesn't mean they are the same, most twins hate it when being adressed as "one" person. So if your saying that one of the twins can bend and the other can't and it hasn't got anything to do with genetics is just crap talk...
Let me explain with a RL situation:
When a woman gives birth to an indentical twin (twins that look the same and are of the same gender) you would find simularities in both looks and in behaviour. But even in the looks wich is most of the time identical there are still some diffrences, some twins have a lot of diffrences some have a few. The one in the fortuneteller episode looked pretty much the same but in RL when your a teacher in a class or your in a class with identical twins you will see loads of diffrences between them though they are ofcourse smaller then "regular" twins (twins that most of the time don't look the same and don't act the same and are of diffrent gender)...
Even if it's something small as when they are eating something, sometimes the one likes it more then the other and the other way around. That does point out the fact that there is some diffrence between them. here some info:
Every thing that's diffrent could be seen in your genes and "your" genes are a combination of both your fathers genes and your mothers genes wheter you like it or not (that's the principle of genetics). So it is possible (in principle) that in the avatar world the one has the abillity to bend and the other one hasn't.

But then again it's up to the writers to decide if they stick to this or not.
