I feel that "Bending" is not a genetic trait. Think about it, In "the fortuneteller", there are twins, one of whom can earthbend. Also, screw the boy gets father's bending and girl gets mom's, coz Ursa wasn't a firebender and Azula still became one. Plus, even with Katara and Sokka, their parents were benders while Sokka ended up "normal". So I think its just chance.

how do you know for sure that Ursa wasn't/isn't a Firebender?

there was already a thread on this if not more:
    http://www.tv.com/avatar-the-last-airbender/show/28841/bending-genetics-or-not/topic/13281-281930/msgs.html&page=0
everything that been said here so far had been said there and more, it was somewhat argeed by the end that bending was not genetic.

I have thought about all of the possible hybrids, and I came up with these solutions. Some need a little more thought though:
    Air+Water=Cloudbender
    Air+Earth=Sanbender
    Air+Fire=Gasbender
    Water+Earth=Mudbender
    Water+Fire=Oilbender
    Earth+Fire=Lavabender
    Air+Water+Earth=Lifebender
    Air+Water+Fire=Steambender
    Air+Earth+Fire=Smokebender
    Water+Earth+Fire=Sludgebender
    Air+Water+Earth+Fire=Elementbender(other than Avatar)

Alot of these can be done by a single bender, katara can bend clouds and mud, and toph can bend sand and mud. Therefore, the hybrid is not needed for these. i think an earthbender could bend lava, it is just molten rock. But i guess we dont know that.

Also, i dont think bending is genetic at all, or else you would have people with crossbreeds basically no matter how you twist it. Plus if the avatar was merely a genetic mutaion then their could be more than one at once. The avatar is a spirit that inhabits a new child after it is born. I think that all other benders exhibit the same principle. Its the spirit that matters, not the genetics.

Thats for questions that have a specific answer from the show, this is a discussion and therefore shouldn't be in the ask a question get an answer.

    Yeah, otherwise Sokka could waterbend.
Although that would be cool, and he could make like cool little Ice Boomerangs.

Um..not exactly. More like a parent who is one element and a parent who is two.

Itd be interesting... not sure whether through genetics or through hard training, but ive thought of people bending multiple things

I like the idea of hybrids... but I dont know. Cloud bender... a water bend can easily do that, since a cloud is a gas form of water... gas is steam of different elements... though, if one was both a water and an air bender, itd help the waterbending side to fly up to the cloud to bend it.

I originally did not say that the combinations were based on genetics, only that the combinations are the likely result of two or more different disciplines.
Also, although the sandbenders only have the power to earthbend, sand is earth with an air-like quality. The same can be said of an earthbender or a water bender bending mud or slurry.

    Air+Water=Cloudbender

Check The Fortuneteller episode of season 1

    Air+Earth=Sanbender:

Has already been explained that it's just earthbending...

    Air+Fire=Gasbender

The only mean of gas that occurs in avatar is gas form of water there is nog other gas.

    Water+Earth=Mudbender

Already shown how they do that.

    Water+Fire=Oilbender

Water and fire doesn't create oil... it's a completely diffrent substance a substance that doesn't occur in avatar only coal is around in the avatar world.

    Earth+Fire=Lavabender

It's the same as mud bending, but only avatar roku has been seen doing it, also i think a firebender alone is able to do it just look at first episode of season 2 the avatar state.

    Air+Water+Earth=Lifebender

    Life bender???
    you mean leaf???
if you do mean leaf it has already been explained in the swamp.

    Air+Water+Fire=Steambender

Steam is nothing but hot air... also when you see the episode The Drill of season 2 katara is bending steam by herself, how cuz it's only another stage of water.

    Air+Earth+Fire=Smokebender

smoke can be bend by an airbender cuz it's mixed with the air but can not be bend like air itself by an airbender it's just the air that it's mixed with that's getting bend.

    Water+Earth+Fire=Sludgebender

IS MUD just read that comment about the mudbender.

    Air+Water+Earth+Fire=Elementbender(other than Avatar)

Damn do you even watch this show everybody knows that to keep balance one has to know all elements.

I don't think you have watched this show good enough...
why becuz half of you mixes are already done or explained in the show itself.
Also it is impossible for someone to bend 2 (or more) iffrent elements, why cuz that would ruin the balance.

I hope you understand, if not then i wasted my time writing this stuff for nothing...
    and i don't like that .

Better to say bending is not SOLELY genetic. There are likely genetic elements to it otherwise you would have benders of all disciplines in all the areas. Plus there are families of strong benders, e.g. the Royal Family in the Fire Nation.

It could be a matter of nature vs. nurture, with the reason why there are no firebenders in the Earth Kingdom being that they simply don't try, or that they have nobody to teach them. It could be a simple matter of putting people in an environment conductive to learning a particular type of bending.

But that still doesn't explain the families with strong bending talents.
