Okay, here's the thing I really don't understand.

Aang got his tattoo's from the monks, right? The arrows represent the respect for the flying bisons, who are the ones who learned them airbending. Why, oh why do these tattoo's glow when Aang goes in the avatar state? Maybe the monks already knew about Aang being the avatar, and that might be the reason why they gave him some kind of ''special and spiritual'' (lol) tattoo, but why would they do that???I mean, it's prety obvious to see when an avatar is in the avatar state, their eyes glow! They don't need to give him special ''glow in the dark'' tattoo's as an extra warning to back off when he's in this state. It's a true mystery for me, and I hope that you guys might have the/an answer for me, or maybe no one knows and we just have to hope that they'll explain this thing later in the show.

If there isn't already a predetermined explaination, I think it is because Aang is the most powerful Avatar there has ever been, as he has acquired all the spirits of his past lives etc or something and it is another form of 'expelling' that power.

OOoo... possibly the monks saved the eyes of previous avatars in pickle jars, then mushed them up to create the ink which they used to tatoo Aang.

Or the monks have a special technique - ie - tatooing, which focuses their energy at their most powerful points. They do it for all air benders but because Aang is so much stronger, he lights up like a festive tree.

They should do an Avatar Christmas Special.

Can't we just file this under "Cuz the creators wanted it to"? I mean seriously in a show where characters can punch and flames shot out we really expect everything to make sense? I say just don't worry about it and enjoy the show

They probably did it just for dramatic efect. But it also could be that the Air nomads were the most spiritual people, and the tattoos are more like chi conduits or something.

this would seriously make sence... we know that air nomads were more ''spiritually'' because 100% of them are/were air benders.

I think it's because the tattoos were a spiritual marking.

The Tats are a symbol of his spirtuallty.

They glow when he is in a spirtual crisis, like the Avatar State

I've seen all the episodes, but I can't recall....

Have we seen any of the past Avatar's go into the Avatar State?

Man, Roku WAS the Avatar State! He didn't need anything to help him out! The Avatar State is just a fallback for wimps. *coughAANGcough*

ok, ill just act like u never said this crap...

ofcourse i understand that the tattoo's glow when he's linking to the spirit world or when he's contacting his past lifes (maybe those things are the same though). so obviously theres something about the tattoo, but how and why? i guess we wont be able to resolve the ''how'', but what the about the ''why''? like i said before already, why would the monks do such a thing? the other elements dont seem too have these tattoo's, so its not needed for the avatar.

srry, but why the hell do you say this? i just explained in my first post that the tattoo's stand for the markings on the flying bisons. this way they show they respect their first air bending teachers...

In the episode "The Avatar State" Avatar Roku explains everything. And I agree with the guy that said it's just because the creator wanted to.

ok, heres the deal... u only post if u have something usefull to say, okay? no offence, but i dont think u even get the point here. we're talking about the tattoo's/markings on Aang and any other airbender's body. dont start about what avatar Roku explained us, cause he didnt mention the ''glowing tats'' of the airbending avatars. he was just explaining what the avatar state is, and the positive and negative points about it.

The monks knew Aang was the avatar, but they weren;t going to tell him untill he was 16.

And thus, his tattoos spontaneously glow because he was taught early.
