I'm going with Zuko's Journey as a spirit quest.

As Zuko doesn't think ahead, he would get drawn into a trap against Fire Nation Soldiers and be cornered by Azula. His only chance, redirect lightning. Except, he lets it 'into his heart' and is near death. There he makes his way either being lead by or to his mother.

    As to how she died

When she went to the fire lord, her husband (Zuko's father) was willing to give up his save for his own hide, but she said something to the effect of 'her life for her son's' and the Fire Lord took compassion on her, outraging??Zuko's Father, who??then??struck her down, killing her, and then killed his own Father who would have probably denounced him right there, for killing someone, he himself had just spared.

Since one royal death is suspicious, two might not be overlooked. So he gave a funeral for his father, and made it look like his wife just left.

It's just an idea, but I mean come on, Zuko's Father burned the face of his own son and banished him on??a pointless (at the time) quest. He's capable of anything.

There's two huge rumors going around: "Zuko gets sick and fights for his life" and "Zuko searches for mommy". I simply put the two together, Watson and found one possible solution. Elementary, my dear Zinger. Elementary.

Brilliant deduction, masterofaeons, I too could find myself entirely partial towards your powers of deduction. Perhaps, however, you have forgotten to bring the crumpets? No matter! I have still brought forth the tea! As civilized brothers in eternity we shall find ourselves some fish-chips and vinegar to compliment this fine occasion! I do believe I have some of the olde wineyard left! let us open a grande old bottle in celbration of your masterful intuition.
Oh look old chum, it's time for me to go! Ta ta!

Azulon take pity??? umm... doesn't seem the type.?? If she brought it up, he would probably be angry with her thinking she spied on their conversation or something.?? Good theory though.?? I still think it's possible she is alive.

.I don't think it would be a weepy 'I'll take my son's place.' But rather a firm and defensive, 'You want my son, you go through me.' That might be the sort of strenght that he could respect. And that rare moment of 'pity' might just set Ozai off.

I actually think that the serious illness will make Zuko decide to look for his mother, but since he has to go to the FN to do so, he sticks with the gAang and teaches Twinkletoes firebending (either him or dear Uncle, who'll obviously go with him) while doing so. After some time he gets sick of them and goes his own way (like he did in Zuko alone).
I also think that Katara will heal his scar, just because it would make him too obvious in the fire nation.
    (Please don't hurt me...)

I still not sure what to thing. Zuko could set off to go find her by why would he now? I know it is his mom but why now after so many years would he decide to find her? Zuko alone it seemed he was very close to his mother. So why didn't he go and find her when he got a little older? The avatar chase was unlogical because peolpe thought he had dyed. It would have seemed more logical to try and find his mom whom he would have a better chance to find her.
