Someone brought up a good point. But I think the reason why these kids seem more powerful than their predecessors is b'cuz they sorta had to be. The situation called for them to be better than what the previous had to do. Katara had to master waterbending if she was going to help Aang at all, Zuko had to be better if he was going to capture the Avatar who was getting better and then later help defeat his father; Azula was pretty much a perfectionist, and Aang had the world's fate in his hand.

Bumi, Pakku, and Iroh didn't have that heavy of a responsibility--the world wasn't in their hands.

If this makes sense at all.

I am about to badly contradict myself (Sorry, a guy can change his opinion), but I fully agree with this...

It's good that you can admit you were wrong Don't worry about it. Or, at least, that you thought you were wrong.

Oh believe me, I was indeed wrong on my part! I was channeling the points I made in the "Most Powerful Benders" Thread into this thread! But I do kind of think that 50% of what I said is true.

Very good point! They are the main characters with a very big responsibility. So they writers had to make them strong.

Thank you. ^_^ In addition, the previous generation's reasons for becoming stronger were different than the current generations.

Iroh was prince and a general--heir to the throne. Piandao wanted to prove his worth (if Nick.com is right about his origins); Bumi...? And Jeong Jeong served the FN military. The only pressure they faced was from themselves. I think.

Also Mike and Bryan needed to keep their audience interested--and powerful characters are one way to go.

Pakku hasn't had real combat in 85 years (assuming he helped capture the uniforms), Ozai just sits on his ass all day, Bumi is well insane and very old, and Iroh I think he is just old, because he used to be great and he might have been able to beat Ozai (Aang needed avatar state) so he was still pretty powerful
