Up intil i saw Kyoshi, i didn't know the avatar could be female.

Uh, why wouldn't they be? It would be a bit sexist if the avatar could only be male.
Yeah it'd definitely be sexist, but the reason why it's kind of surprising is because that means the Avatar is not tied to a specific sex. Only his spirit/soul stays the same over different lifetimes.

But religions that believe in reincarnation have always felt that you could be reincarnated as the other gender. In Hinduism a cow is the highest form, followed by male, followed by female. It makes sense that there are female Avatars.

And I was really glad that we got to see female master airbenders. I knew they existed because the creators said they lived in the east and west; and because we saw the one when Roku is talking to Aang. But I have always wondered if they had tatoos or what. Now we know!

And as a side note, Kyoshi was definatly an Earthbender. She was shown was the Earthbending Avatar, and here island is part of the Earth nation, and that is her place in the cycle.

So does that mean the next Avatar could be a cow?

    ROFL x 10!!!!

I'm just curious: if the Eastern Air Temple is only for girls, how come we find out in "The Storm" they were going to send Aang there?

my guess is that he might have "concentrated" better there. also, it wasn't as far away as the Northern Air Temple

There is women airbenders because in the episode "The Avatar State" there was a women earthbender when Avatar Roku was explaining to Aang about the Avatar State.
