its definatly a side-art like sandbending, plantbending, and lightning bending...execpt it is a highly specific side-art with only one person capable of it

and yeah I completly forgot about Toph for a second, she would definatly be a prodigy as well. She almost completly self taught, all her actual teacher showed her were the basic stances.

    Bending prodigies:
Aang (professionally taught, youngest air-master in history)
Katara (self taught, named master after only 3 weeks professional training)
    Toph (completly self taught)
Azula (professionally trained, but still extremely advanced for her age)

    Totally agree with LordMordor

I like how Katara and Toph each have special abilities(healing and metal bending) that I guess makes them unique. I've always wondered why Katara didn't try to teach Aang to heal. So I'm assuming Toph's keeping metal bending to herself.

Does Toph bend the impurities in metal or just bend the metal?

The impurities. She's only able to see them because she's blind. If it wasn't for her blindness, she probably wouldn't be able to do it.
Consider this: the impurities are there, whether the bender knows exactly where they are or not. It's not like benders are conscious of every last molecule of material they use to bend. Perforating metal is a matter of will. Most earthbenders probably don't have the will to make the lots of??little holes necessary to weaken metal.

I use to think katara's ??healing ??was a rare gift because the guy that?? tried to teach Aang firebending said so and then When Katara got the the north pole there was a group of young girls that were learning how to heal which makes me wonder if it really ??is a rare gift or?? maybe it was just those group of girls that could do it. iroh I think has special abilties he can redirct lighting and he?? cna go into the spirt world. Ok that last one really didn't have anything to do with bending but it is still a rare gift.

Anyone else noticed that Aang also Earthbends with the Praying Mantis form just like Toph? Just before he makes a move his hands are held out just like Toph's was in "Blind Bandit"

Most of the time, the student gets better than the teacher but i highly doubt Aang will learn "metalbending" simply because its a hidden talent that toph has and she's the first one to realize this. This is very difficult to teach on someone who can see with his eyes but not with his heart... lol

oh on the toph and bumi fight...

they are now very evenly matched but toph has a weakness...a very bad weakness i might add. Considering bumi thinks outside the box, he will eventually figure out what her weakness is thus leading to this event:

Bumi: hmmmm something's up... *turns whole field into sand...

    Game over!!! lol

Another thing: Now that Toph knows she can move the tiny impurities in metal, she may be able to pick up some sand bending (like anchoring her feet or operating a sand sailer), but not everything (since she can't accurately use her earth vision on sand).
