Nickelodeon (ended 2008)
We have to remember that the FN 100 years ago wasn't the same FN in present time.
The old FN was ruled by Sozin and he I believe was evil...So evil that he would commit genocide just to get an edge on a war.
The current FN is ruled by Ozai and he is far less harsh than his grandfather. It is even stated in the episode "The Southern Air Temple" that Ozai has no intent on killing the Water Tribe or Earth Kingdom people after he wins the war (if he wins) he simply wants to rule over them and??basically make the world one big nation.
So old FN insane killers. Current still bad since they're the antagonists of the show but not insane murderers.

I think it was a combination of looking for Aang, and taking out a weak opponent. To me the Air Nomads have always seemed the weakest of the four nations. Maybe its becuase they are mostly monks and are peaceful in nature. I think the FN went looking for Aang, realized he was gone, that the Nomads were weak and just took them out. |
My War theory:
FN unleashes its first attack on the air-nomads, taking themc ompletly by surprise with their enhanced powers and killing everyone they can in the hopes of killing the current Avatar-in-training (Aang). If the air-nomads said he ran away do you really think the FN would believe them, their only chance at getting the Avatar was to slaughter everyone
After the avatar is presumed dead and the air nomads destroyes, the FN next targets the Water tribe (the next nation in the cycle). At this point they may or may not still posses their power boost from the comet. The strike hard and fast, reducing the Southern Water tribe to almost nothing and forcing the Northern tribe to focus completly on their own defense. This allows the FN complete control over the worlds oceans and water ways.
Now that they control the seas they focus on the land-locked Earth Nation. Here rather than a swift victory they slowly push deeper and deeper into the Earth Kingdom, depriving the nation of supplies and soldiers.
their reaons are probably two fold...to eliminate the Avatar...and the Air Nomads are just that Nomads...if they hit Ba Sing Tse first(unlikely but just an example) the Nomads would just take to the skies and they'd never be able to??find and eliminate them all...so take down the most elusive threat first then get the other more stablized ones...and that Avatar being born an Airbender was just double the target for the FN...also Air and Fire are very similar...both have unlimited access to their respective elements(you can take Earth and Waterbenders away from their source)...you don't want someone to fight you who shares your strengths and is a very elusive opponent so...buhbye Airbenders...that's my take anyway

FN: what? you don't know where the avatar is? AN: yeah, he ran away. we can't find-- FN: then DIE!!!! even then, i can't see that happening. they probably raided all of the temples and killed everyone in sight, by taking them by surprise. maybe they were hoping to get aang to go into the avatar state, i don't know. or maybe the air nomads weren't as weak as everyone thinks they were. just because they were peaceful doesn't mean they were helpless. you can be a blackbelt and still be a pacifist. the air nomads valued life, but that doesn't mean they didn't bother learning how to kick the crap out anyone that tried to take theirs. from the looks of that room that aang found gyatso in, it looked like the old man took on a few dozen FN soldiers all by himself. |
yea i agree with neverbeenpinker. if you have the element of suprise, you never attack the weakest group, you always attack the strongest so you take them out of the picture first. then??it would be easier to pick off the rest of them. but i think it was just for the storyline that aang, being the avatar and belonging to the air nomads, was killed first. it does make sense tho, cause the avatar is the only one that stands in the way of the fire nation winning the war, zhao said so in the "southern air temple."
The AirNomads knew about the war, that's why the monks told Aang he was the Avatar before he was 16.
And Aangs not that peaceful, he never had a problem killing firebenders before.
