Despite the fact that I was very worried that they were going to have a cliffhanger in season 2, I did not see one, and can someone point it out to me so I can scream in horror that the shows creators screwed us?
An episode that doesn't end with a cliff hanger has a sense of closure to it. You pretty much know what there is to know and it doesn't really matter where the show takes you to next (provided that it doesn't leave the overall main plot, that is). The season 2 finale, however, left us with a wealth of things to dwell on while we wait for the next season to being. Many questions got left unanswered by the episode and there wasn't that sense of closure to what's going on now. Here are a few things that I can think of off the top of my head:
1. How well will Aang recover from being shot down? 2. Did Zuko really side with Azula or was it all a plan? 3. If it isn't a plan, will Zuko's remorse turn him back to Iroh? (He seemed dissapointed with himself in betraying him). 4. THE EARTH KINGDOM HAS FALLEN!!! 5. Where will they go now and what will happen next? 6. Will Aang ever fully master the avatar state? 7. Will Long Feng try to retaliate against Azula? 8. What's become of Iroh since his capture in the ruins of old Ba Sing Sei? 9. What chain of events will unfold on the day of black sun? 10. What happened to Sokka and Katara's father? 11. WAS there pickle in that onion and banana juice?!?!?! (LOL)
The season 1 finale, on the other hand, did leave some questions, but had much more of a sense of closure to it. The good guys had a major victory with the help of the avatar, Iroh and Zuko had safely fled (though without much more than the clothes on their backs)... the only real questions left were of the fate of Zhao and the question of what was Azula being assigned to do by her father.
This is the best way I can think of to explain it. Someone else may have a better answer than me.
I voted for season 2 finale, BTW.
