first, nick just made that up second, they got it wrong. zuko didn't defeat azula in the agni kai. katara beat her. nick is so stupid -_-
I would disagree. I believe Zuko beat Azula in the Agni Kai and that is why she shot the lightning at Katara. Azula knew she lost. Zuko had knocked Azula down, and the one ace in the hole Azula had (lightning generation) was no longer an advantage against Zuko.

Zuko would have likely won the fight if Katara wasn't there to give Azula an extra target....but then again, the result might have been different if Azula hadn't gone off the deep end.

Even Iroh knew Zuko would still be at a disadvantage against Azula, and Zuko himself then agreed, thus why Katara was brought along in the first place. Once Zuko saw the state she was in he knew he could take her alone.

He even took advantage of it when he goaded her into attempting a lightning attack. Normal Azula would have been smart enough not to bother since she knew he could just redirect it, but crazy-azula gave in to the taunts, she was just lucky there was an extra target.

Azula won the Agni Kai - she would only have been disqualified if Katara had actually been hit with the lightning. Therein lies the strength of the moment - Zuko was forced to choose between winning the Agni Kai at the cost of Katara's life, or sacrificing himself to save her. He made the right choice - the epitome of the incredible character changes he has gone through. But Azula won.

Of course if Azula had been sane during the fight I remain dead certain that she would have been able to triumph without trickery.

Azula's victory can be compared to a game of tennis. If one of the players hits the ball and it is going out, but for some reason the other player hits it back in before it can go out, the ball is not out. The fact that the ball would have gone out if the other player hadn't interfered is irrelevant - because he chose to hit it back in the ball is still in play, and if the player who originally hit the ball ends up winning the point, that is the fault of the other player who was stupid enough to hit it back in when it was going out.

So Azula won - she did so by forcing her opponent to choose between two bad results. Even though her opponent was stronger, she was smarter.

you guys are forgetting that zuko & azula's mother is still alive. if anyone was to "fix" azula, it'd be her mother once zuko finds her. all of their past memories of her showed her to be a very peaceful woman, and her tranquility would be the only thing that could help azula with her inner demons and possibly stear their father from his as well.

as for the fight between azula and zuko, i think that zuko would have won. azula already lost her mind when they started fighting, and her lack of focus was no match for zuko's peace of mind. now if she didnt go power hungry and crazy, then it would have been a harder fight. as for iroh suggesting that katara go with zuko, he didnt know azula's mental condition (since he was in the earth nation) and assumed she was still okay and therefore powerful. either way, zuko would have made a good fight with azula fine because of his ability to channel lightning and what he learned from those sun dragons (forgot their name).

She figured out a way that she could force Zuko to sacrifice himself and lose the fight in order to preserve his friend's life. That's pretty smart, and definitely not the defintion of "helpless".

she broke the rules of the agni kai. she was no match for zuko and so targeted katara.
