O.k, time to take this way too seriously. Everyone ready?

Several important things can be seen in this picture. Bear in mind that this is taking place during the evening. The Gaang has been at the southern air temple all day, and the light has started to fade. It is dusk, so therefore the sun will be in the west.

We can see the ocean in the background, so if this is the northern water tribe the ocean will be to the south, if it is the southern then it will be to the north. There is also the possibility that it is some ice outcropping with a body of water in the wrong direction, but we'll ignore that.

Now look at the iceberg in the background to the right. It's left side is clearly lit up, and not just from the temple's glow. That means that the left of this picture is west. Therefore the top of the picture is north.

Since we can see the ocean, and the ocean is to the north, we can conclude that this picture shows the south pole.

OR the templcould be on the other side of the world where it is the morning so the sun is in the East and the top is South thus making it the North pole.

I just think it's more likely that the animators messed up. I don't think anyone, except you two, pay that close attention =p. I just don't think you can get much information from that picture, because there is so much information we could assume about it, yet we're just convincing ourself something that isn't true. I just don't think an animated picture is reliable.

I agree. In my opinion, the creators didn't (and don't plan to) visit the water shrine. The inclusion of the four shrines (water, earth, fire, air) was to alert each nation that the avatar had returned. Even though we'll probably never see the water shrine, imagine if it hadn't existed. The water tribe would have no idea that the Avatar was alive, which would have altered the storyline. By including the four shrines, each nation became aware of Aang's existence, so now the entire world knows of his return.

I'd say it was in the North Pole, because the indicator for the South Pole that the Avatar had returned was...

    The uh, Avatar himself...

    -_-

The South Pole is way too underdeveloped to have a temple. It would have been destroyed along with everything else.

Logic and common sense beats overanalysis.

Ack, I have got to stay away from this place. (goes back to studying)

I think it's seperated from the rest of civilization. The fire temple was on some random island. It doesn't have to be near the actual tribes. But I think people are over analyzing this. Just chill out and go with your gut instinct.

Question: How do you guys know the Avatar sun rises in the east and sets in the west like ours? What if their planet spins the other way? Yeah, half the logic in this thread just got owned.

Sokka: This ceremony didn't take place at sunrise; it took place at sunset. Look at the shadows.
Katara: They point east. So the sun must have been in the west.

You know what I think? I think that the creators of the show hadn't finalized the design of the North pole when this was animated. :b

no it is in the north pole because the north pole is more civilisized than the south pole. the south pole can't even make an igloo that you can appriciate so somebody please explain how can the south pole make a gorgeous shrine with a crystal on top? see?????? their tribe's economy is very low i assume

    thanks.......

Good, except this is one of the poles. Day and night are not as clear as that.

Did you watch the Puppet Master? Did you see what the Southern Water Tribe looked like before the FN destroyed it?

I think there is an animation error.

At the poles, it is ~6 months of day, and ~6 months of night. When the gaang was at the North Pole, the days flashed by instead of staying night or day for six months. Proof: The kids first reached the Norht Pole in daylight, later on at the dinner, it was night. Even more later on, it was day again. The gaang would have had to stay a couple of years at the North Pole in order to accomplish that, and it is clear in the series that they traveled the world for only a few months (a year tops).

Sorry if that made no sense, I stink at explaining

Doll, no one understands really what you are saying. If you are going to criticize someone's math you ought to learn how to write clearly. anywho!

there's no concrete evidence to which side of the world it was on. The temple's going to be pretty old (Older than 100 years, certainly) and by our buddy, Kyoshi's, *Ahem* dictation, we know that the southern water tribe's civilization was in good shape prior to 100 years ago. I'm willing to bet the temple was taken care of during the raids had it been the south pole.

But considering the logic of storytelling it is probably somewhere in the north pole as the south pole would already know that the avatar was alive.... since he was found there.

In the Southern Air Temple Aang goes into the Avatar State. When he does, these temples lite up:

    Southern Air Temple

    Avatar Roku's Temple

    Kyoshi's Shrine

Also, a temple lites up that we can tell is in a water tribe. But it's not in the South Pole, as we saw the lone village there, and it looks nothing like what we saw in the North Pole. And it isn't in a deserted or destroyed place, since there are people there. Is it just in a part of the North Pole we've never seen, or was it overlooked by the creators? Or could it be in a part of the world we've never seen before?

north pole doesnt only have one city. it could be in a different part of the north.
