Well, by that time he had already changed from how he used to be. Lu Ten died some years before that, which changed his entire outlook on life. He became a "different man".
I'm gonna go with this guy/girl.

Why do you think Iroh chose to go with Zuko? He was a well-respected general (I think), and even if Ozai started his propaganda then, well I'm sure Iroh would still have some pull. Or at least a few followers. As I said, he was a well respected general? With his only failure being the one at Ba Sing Se (so I think I've read). The original crown prince. Surely people loved him.

And he loves Zuko as we know. After losing his son he thought of his nephew as his son. As we know. And we know it hurt him to see Ozai burn and banish his own son.

But why would he choose to go with Zuko? What do you think? His love for Zuko? Or anger at his brother? Did he have words with Ozai, heated words? No pun intended.

I know I look into things a lot but I don't think it was just because it was his nephew or just because he was his teacher. Azula was sent to the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, so surely Zuko had a teacher before Iroh?

Anyway enough of my ramblings. Why do you think Iroh chose to go with Zuko?

iroh went with zuko because after lu ten died iroh cared for zuko during his banishment like his own son (he said it in some episode i'm not sure which one) as you mentioned before.

also iroh wasnt that respected after he surrendered at Ba Sing Se, i doubt many respected him considering ozai probably named him a traitor

also iroh probably wouldnt have chased after the throne because he probably didnt get word until ozai was in power. also iroh was probably depressed after the loss of his son to do anything about ozai
