if toph can tell when people are lying, then why couldnt she tell that azula was faking her surrender in "the chase"?

is this one of those things that dont make sense, but we have to pretend it did?

If anyone could be completely unaffected by lying, it'd be Azula.

both Toph and Iroh were temporairly distracted by the realization that they knew each other and confusion as to why each was there I'm sure

Iroh recognized Toph's face, she recognized him thru her talk with him when they had tea together BUT at that point (and still kinda to this day)... neither knows what exactly brought them to be together at the same time.?? Afterall, Iroh really doesn't know she is the one teaching the Avatar earthbending and Toph has no idea that Iroh is the uncle of Zuko, even though she knows he is attempting to guide a younger individual.?? Also Toph really has had no history of who Zuko is and the gang's past run-ins with him.??

    Just my thoughts...

In most psychopaths (like Azula) it is impossible to tell if they are lying. There brain is so warped and twisted they can believe what they are saying, even if they know it's not true. Kinda strange but they have beaten modern day lie detectors. This is another example of how messed up Azula is.

???????? There also could be a range limit to how well she can tell if someone is lying. Remember she had walk up and touch the wall right next to Jet before she said he was telling the truth. Same when she placed her hand right at the feet of Jet and Smellerbee. Also, she was standing less than a foot away from both Katara (when Toph asked if Jet was a former boyfriend) and Jet (when he was lying there dying) when she said she could tell both of them were lying. Azula was standing closer to 5-8 feet away.

    Just a thought.

Have you ever heard of the lie reading technique where you look to the top left with your eyes, which opens the creative - hence lying - part of your brain? Even though people are aware of it, they don't always take notice because they are distracted, it isn't always at the forefront of thoughts etc.

Basically, no worries. It wasn't a writing problem or Toph being evil. Just human.

Azula may be considered a "sociopath" in modern day psychology terms. In other words, a modern day lie detector would not be able to detect her "lying" as Toph couldn't.

Or maybe Toph was too caught up in the "something is about to go down" rush of things. In the other scenes where she can tell they are lying or not lying she has time to walk closer to them, touch the ground or wall or something they are touching. She didn't have that opportunity then. They really need Toph in the cave to know if Azula is lying about "working together"

Or maybe, Azula wasn't, at first, faking. Maybe she was going to surrender, but then saw that Iroh could easily be attacked. -shrug- dunno...

Yea, because when everyone was surrounding her, she was all like "Oh crap". Then Iroh notices Toph and he looks at her wondering why she's there, and Azula seeing him distracted shot her crazy blue fire at him, which she knew would distract the rest of them as well.

Besides the fact she was distracted by finding Iroh, she probably also felt the vibrations from all the other people she was closer to (Katara, Aang, Saka, Zuko). She felt their heartbeats not Azula's.

she was not lying 100%... she was only lying about the surrender part, not about the being defeated part. i mean, she WAS defeated and thats why she had to retreat. but because of her pride she couldnt resist to give Iroh a final hit.

now i think about it, was it meant to be deadly...? maybe it wasnt meant to kill him, just to show them her strength.
i think she wants to kill him with some kind of 1v1 fight, just like she wants to kill her brother.

Very interesting thoughts......I agree. Except Toph asked who Zuko was, remmeber, Katara said, "It could be Zuko, we haven't seen him sence the North Pole?" Then Toph asked,"Who is Zuko?" Then Sokka replied, "Ohh just some agery friek with a pony tail that has chased us half-way around the world." So she could have wondered if this is who they were talking about.

I think when you lie the physical reaction that occurs is a nervous reaction because you might be found out.?? When you get nervous your heart rate quickens, but they had just been fighting and running around, Azula's heartrate would have been abnormal anyway.?? Also like was already said,?? Toph wasn't as close to Azula as she was to Jet.
