    I heard they were gonna make stuff up for when nobody was around. Maybe they captured the witnesses and people who helped Aang and put those witnesses/helpers in the Boiling Rock or another jail. Then maybe, since they were already there, they forced the people to tell them what happened when they were with Aang. It's possible.
