    So did he reach the avatar state or did he not quite get there and he will have to deal with it again in season 3?

    It's a mystery.
    It looks like he got it but before when the Guru was teaching him, he fell off the aurora. Failing to achieve the Avatar state.
    The same thing happened when he was shocked.
    In my opinion, I think he reached the Avatar state.
