How come Aang is not as powerful in his Airbending as Toph is in her Earthbending, or Katara in her Waterbending and Azula is in her Firebending??? He seems the weakest in his OWN bending art!!!?? We still haven't fully seen how powerful a true Airbender should be.?? They should have shown how powerful Monk Gyatso was.?? Can't Aang use a tornado??? Couldn't he separate land like Avatar Kyoshi did to make Kyoshi island??? I just don't see how Azula is more powerful than Aang since they're both Masters and Aang knows a second bending art - Waterbending.?? There is no way that she should have been able to take on 1 no less 4 benders (all from different elements) and been able to go unscathed. ??

well...actually you're seeing airbending for what it really is...airbenders battle tactic??is avoid the attack...so that would put their attack-defense ratio at about 10% attack to 90% defense...we've seen Ang create a big tornado (King of Omashu) but it was a defensive move more than an attacking one...the most offensive attack i've seen Ang use is blasts of air(which is all an airbender can do) which don't inflict much damage...while firebenders are aggressors...so when a firebender fights an airbender you'll see the firebender attack alot and the airbender out manuver him(just like against Azula and Zuko on all those occasions)...we haven't seen Ang need to blow someone away that much yet...maybe he'll unleash that power on Fury of the Avatar...unless Fury means past Fury where Ang learns more about his past lives...

Airbenders are peaceful individuals, and airbending as an art lacks a deadly finishing move. It is the most dynamic of the arts, but when it comes to power, airbending is the least powerful. And I disagree that Katara is more powerful in ehr waterbending than Aang in his airbending. Aang is and has been a master for over 100 years (technically) and is much more experienced. The most waterbending we've seen Katara do is the water whip and some fancy moves, which Aang could easily top, in episode 18 in her "fight" against Pakku and also the ones against Zuko in the finale.

I was wondering that myself, Aang is pretty darn powerful but??I think his mind works in different ways. An air bender would theoretically be able to suck the air out of someones lungs and suffocate them, or create a massive tornado. But as I said Aang would not think of suffocating someone as it would kill them, and a tornado is incredibly destructive which may be why he does not do that. Think about it do you ever see earth benders unleashing massive earquakes, or Waterbenders flooding towns??? No because it is too destructive to justify for battle.

Airbenders are monks i think it was bumi said "typical airbender tatic avoid and evade" they use the others attack against the as fire earth and water can be redirected by air so defensively is their strength.

What I would like to see more of is Aang using his teachings (so far water and a little fire) when he is faced with a battle situation when it seems he resorts pretty much only to airbending. My best guess as to why he is holding back (in my opinion) may be he (or the writers) is trying to keep his abilities as unknown as possible, so that enemies can not prepare for him.

I know he said he will never firebend again, but not even for defense (such as Azula did)? Seems odd to me to have the knowledge and not use it. I understand his position, but how can he ever be a fully realized Avatar unless he masters firebending. If he doesn't get fully realized will that also break the Avatar cycle???

Aang should use airbending as his defense, and now that he knows some waterbending he should really start attacking more with it.

AIr bending seems to be hard to inflict damage. The only way it seems to be able to deal damage is to blow them into a wall or something. But they also seem to be a truly defensive element. Deflecting projectiles, flying, running at a high speed most of those are used for evading an attack. Maybe running at a high speed could let him throw a really powerful punch though.

Actually, in my Dark Avatar Theory, I suggested that Aang learn my theorized "Lightbending" in Spirit world, and between suggested seasons 5 and 6, Books of Light and Balance, respectively, he would age a few years. This would be to account for voice actor Zachary Tyler (Aang) going through puberty and make for some funny moments when he returns to his body, such as his clothes splitting because he has severely outgrown them. Also, the awkwardness of the hormonal changes on his emotions would provide some funny moments when he interacts with his equally aged friends (Aang would have essentially missed out on the process of puberty entirely and have NO clue as to what was wrong with him, he might even have a head of hair when he wakes up, and certainly have a new outfit).

Interesting that you say that, because in the beginning the Air bender portrayed seems to be about the size of a full grown man, or a 17 yr. old.

Dudes in real life tornados and Hurricanes kill way more people then fire nowadays. Fires are usually stoped early. But you can,t really stop a hurrican look at New Orleans.

Yes, aang should be more powerful. It makes no sense he hasn't mastered waterbending yet but katara has, in the water bending scroll aang looked at the scroll once and mastered it while katara couldn't until much later in the episodes. The only reason katara mastered water bending was to make her more important, having two waterbenders in a group will take away some of katara's thunder. What is the excuse of aang not mastering waterbending he doesn't try hard, with enough talent you don't have to try that hard. What is the point of water book and earth book if aang hasn't mastered the previous element the whole reason for season one was for aang to go to the north water tribe and learn water bending, which he didn't wasting a whole season, and why wouldn't he work hard after winter solice the message he got from avatar roku he would work hard don't you think.

new orleans flooded because the levies broke, not from the hurricane it self

i live in New Orleans...so i know first hand...Katrina had passed hours ago??and the waters was still rising...if the levee's held the only problem would be repairing the Superdome's roof and just about everythign else wind related...

I figure the reason Aang still only uses Airbending in combat is because that is what he's accustomed to. Ignoring the 100 year sleep thing and there is an approximatly 12 year old who has been raised his whole life as an airbender.
he has maybe known waterbending for a few months tops. Sure he could use it for small things like washing Appa, but in the heat of battle it would only make sense for him to use what he knows...and what he knows best is airbending.

I actually doubt Aang will fully learn all the elements by the end of the show. Like water bending he is probably going to get a crash course but not really "master" each element. But luckily in his party he currently has an almost master waterbender, a master earthbender, and by the third season in all likelyhood a seasoned firebender (Zuko).
so my prediction is that rather than fully learn all the elements Aang will rely on his friends. Kinda cliche, but still cool

okay so my theory on why aang hasn't used so much water bending is because. if you haven't noticed he's not around alot of water and he doesn't exactly carry around ammo like katara does. so I believe that when he feels more comfortable with earthbending we'll see a bit more of that than waterbending

This is really a mute point, since; 1) Aang does not know how to make a hurricane, and 2) even if he did, the destructive power of a hurricane would almost guarantee that Aang would NEVER use it.
